Ichabods return home to face Hornets in Senior Night Turnpike Tussle

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the home slate with the Turnpike Tussle facing arch-rival Emporia State on Wednesday in Lee Arena. Washburn (17-7, 14-6 MIAA) is in third place in the MIAA standings coming off a 72-68 win at Pittsburg State for its fourth straight win. The Hornets (13-13, 10-10 MIAA) topped Lincoln 84-70 last time out on Saturday. The game is also the final home game for five Ichabod seniors who will start against the Hornets in Logan Stutz, De'Andre Washington, Nate Daniels, Virgil Philistin and Jadarren Mumpfield. The series is the most-played by the Ichabods as Wednesday's meeting will be the 195th all-time with each team claiming 97 wins.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 695-285 (.710) overall and he has 454 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 406-76 (.840) record going 352-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 695 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 46-20 against Emporia State.
Emporia State's David Moe is 158-124 in his tenth season at ESU. He is the third-winningest coach in ESU history behind Gus Fish and Ron Slaymaker. He led ESU to appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007 and winning seasons in six of the last eight years. He is 10-11 against the Ichabods.

Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 19) PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Washburn used a shot clock buzzer beater with 26 seconds remaining by De'Andre Washington to propel the Ichabods to a 72-68 win in John Lance Arena on Feb. 19 in Pittsburg over the Gorillas. Washburn returns home for its final game in Lee Arena this season when they will play host to Emporia State on Wedneday.
The Ichabods trailed the Gorillas by six points at 50-44 with 16:13 remaining in the game before Washburn took a 51-50 lead on a lay up by Washington. The Gorillas rebounded and pushed their lead to four at 55-51 on a 3-pointer by Adrian Herrera with 10:42 to go. Washington tied the score at 55 with 8:48 to go but the Gorillas took the lead back at 57-55 on their next possession.
Jadarren Mumpfield put the Ichabods on top for good with a 3-pointer from the win at 58-57 with 7:27 to play. Washburn pushed its lead back out to six before the Gorillas cut it back to two with 4:40 to go. A lay up by Alex North after three offensive rebounds on the set put the Ichabods back up six with 3:09 to go. After the teams traded free throws, PSU cut the lead to three at 68-65 leading to Washington's jumper giving the Ichabods back the 3-point lead. Washington then was fouled after the Gorillas missed a pair of 3-pointers and hit both free throws. The Gorillas hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the final margin four.
The Ichabods trailed entering the locker room at halftime 39-34 after leading by as many as five with 8:03 after Logan Stutz put Washburn up 24-19 with a driving lay up. A jump hook in the lane by Brandon Scaife cut the Gorilla lead to two at 34-32 with 1:38 to play before the Gorillas stretched the lead to five at the break. Eight different Ichabods scored in the first 20 minutes led by Stutz's nine points and De'Andre Washington's eight points. The Gorillas were 12 of 16 from the free throw line compared to the Ichabods' 5 of 10.
Stutz scored 17 points to lead the Ichabods with eight rebounds. Washington finished with 16 and Mumpfield scored 10. Eric Ray scored 17 to lead the Gorillas.
Washburn was 26 of 59 from the field hitting 44 percent for the game while the Gorillas were 21 of 43. The Gorillas finished 17 of 21 from the free throw line while the Ichabods were 12 of 20. Washburn out rebounded the Gorillas 37 to 25.

Series history with Emporia State . . .
Wednesday's meeting will be the 195th meeting between these two schools and the series is tied at 97-97. This is the most-played series for Washburn. The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. This will be the 66th straight year they have played each other at least once. Washburn is 26-30 all-time in White Auditorium since home-away records were first kept beginning in 1956-57. The Ichabods are 19-7 against the Hornets in Lee Arena. Washburn is 25-12 against ESU in MIAA games. Washburn is 3-0 against ESU in MIAA Postseason tournament games. The Ichabods have won three of the last four.

Last meeting with Emporia State . . .
(Jan. 15, 2011) EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods jumped out to a 14-point lead to start the game and led from start to finish in a 69-56 win over Emporia State equaling the all-time series with 97 wins each at ESU's White Auditorium.
The Ichabods jumped out to an 18-4 lead over the Hornets in the first 9:50 of the game holding ESU to only one field goal as the Hornets hit only one of their first 11 shots. Washburn was 10 of 26 from the field in the opening stanza and 6 of 20 from 3-point range.
In the second half, the Hornets cut the lead to six with 8:22 to go in the game on a lay up by Taylor Euler, but back-to-back lay-ups by Logan Stutz pushed the lead back to 10. The Hornets cut the margin to seven twice with the final time coming with 4:27 to go at 58-51, but a bucket by Nate Daniels pushed the lead to nine and a 3-pointer by Mitch Allen pushed it back to 12 at 63-61 with 2:35 to go. Washburn stretched the lead to 14 with just over a minute left on a pair of free throws by Stutz. Stutz wrapped up the game with a dunk with 49 seconds to go sealing the 13-point win.
Stutz led the Ichabods picking up his third double double in the last four games with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Twelve of Stutz's points came in the second half when he was 5 of 8 from the field. Jeff Reid scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half hitting 4 of 8 3-pointers and Mitch Allen scored a career-high 12 points on 4 of 6 3-pointers. De'Andre Washington scored seven points with eight rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. The 10 assists were the most by an Ichabod since Mario Scott had 10 against Missouri Western on Jan. 2, 2008.
Xavier Burnett led the Hornets with 21 points.
The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounding the Hornets 44 to 26 including a 13 to 4 advantage on the offensive glass. 

About Emporia State . . .
The Hornets are 13-13 overall and 10-10 in MIAA play after topping Lincoln at home on Feb. 19 84-70 winning their second straight game. ESU is in sixth place in the MIAA standings. Xavier Burnette leads the team in scoring with 14.0 ppg pacing four Hornets in double figure scoring along with Michael Tyler at 12.4 ppg, Adam Holthaus with 11.5 ppg and Matt Boswell with 10.8 ppg. The Hornets are averaging 70.3 ppg while allowing 72.3 ppg. They are -4.1 in rebound margin this season. From the field ESU is 643 of 1407 hitting 46 percent and from 3-point range they are 186 of 516 for 36 percent. ESU has attempted 25 more free throws than its opponents hitting 357 of 509. Emporia State is 3-8 on the road this season.
   
Last time out for Emporia State . . .
ESU Sports Information -- (Feb. 19, 2011) The Emporia State men shot 60 percent from the field in the second half on the way to an 84-70 win over Lincoln on Saturday night in White Auditoriuim. The Hornets led 36-30 at the break but the Blue Tigers opened the second half on a 10-4 run to tie the score 40-40 with 17:20 left in the game. ESU then went on an 8-0 run with Xavier Burnette getting the final six points to go ahead 48-40 and LU would not get closer than six the rest of the way.
Burnette and Michael Tyler each had 14 points to pace the Hornets. They were joined in double figures by Robert Moores with 12 and Matt Boswell with 11 points. LU was led by Derek Stokes with 20 points while Pierre DeClue had a double-double of 10 points and 13 assists.

The Ichabods are 352-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
