Ichabods wrap up regular season with trip to face Blue Tigers

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the regular season on the road at Lincoln on Saturday in Jefferson City, Mo., when they will take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers. The Ichabods (17-8, 14-7 MIAA) can lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MIAA Tournament with a win over the Blue Tigers. Washburn is coming off a 73-68 loss at home to Emporia State while the Blue Tigers (3-22, 1-20 MIAA) pick up their first conference win in a 77-65 win over Truman at home.

The Coaches . . .

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 695-286 (.710) overall and he has 454 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 406-77 (.840) record going 352-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 695 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 19-0 against Lincoln.
Lincoln head coach John Redmond is 8-44 in his second season at Lincoln. He is 0-1 against the Ichabods in his career.
    
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 32) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped their home finale 73-68 to Emporia State in Lee Arena. The Ichabods will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Lincoln before starting the MIAA Tournament next weekend in Kansas City.
Neither team led by more than seven in a game which saw 19 lead changes and 10 ties in the game. ESU broke a 60-all tie with 3:30 to go on a 3-pointer by Xavier Burnett, who followed the three with a free throw with 2:54 to go putting the Hornets up four. Burnette added another three stretching the ESU lead to seven with 2:25 to go in the game. Jadarren Mumpfield cut the lead to five with 1:59 to go with a couple of free throws and Alex North trimmed the lead back to three with 1:03 to play. After the teams traded turnovers, ESU's Michael Tyler pushed the Hornet lead back to five with 26 seconds to play before De'Andre Washington cut the lead back to two with 14 seconds to go. Taylor Euler hit a pair of free throws staking ESU to a four point lead with nine seconds to go. Washington drove to the basket and was fouled on the drive hitting the first free throw and missing the second but the Ichabods could not recover the rebound as ESU hit two more free throws to take the five-point win.
Washington led the Ichabods with 29 points on 11 of 18 shooting from the field including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Stutz finished with 17 points. Xavier Burnett led the Hornets with 19 points.
The Ichabods finished 47 percent from the field hitting 24 of 51 shots while ESU was 46 percent connecting on 25 of 54 shots. Washburn was outrebounded 32 to 27.

Series history with Lincoln . . .

Saturday's meeting will be the 23rd in the series history. Washburn has won the last 19 meetings in the series which began on Dec. 18, 1957 with the Blue Tigers winning 93-80. Lincoln won the next two and the teams did not meet again until Jan. 24, 1990 when the Ichabods won 98-93 on the road. Washburn has won the last 19 games in the series and the last two match ups by an average margin of 26 points. The Ichabods have not played against the Blue Tigers in Jefferson City since a 82-66 win on Jan. 23, 1999. Overall the Ichabods are 7-1 against Lincoln all-time having won their last seven games with the lone loss coming in 1957 in the first meeting in the series.

Last meeting with Lincoln . . .

(Jan. 19, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their 19th straight game over the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a 90-71 win in Lee Arena.
In the first half it was the duo of Logan Stutz and Jeff Reid who combined for 32 points each scoring 16 as the Ichabods took a 46-39 lead into the half. Stutz was 7 of 9 from the field and Reid was 6 of 8 from the field while hitting 4 of 6 3-point attempts. Each team shot the ball well as Washburn was 19 of 35 overall for 54 percent while Lincoln was 15 of 29 for a 52 percent average. Lincoln had its only lead of the game at 8-7 on a 3-pointer by Derek Stokes with 16:26 to go in the half before the Ichabods took the lead for good on their next possession on one of Reid's first half threes.
Washburn stretched its lead to as many as 30 two different times in the game as Washburn turned a 53-44 lead into a 30-point lead ripping off a 23-2 run over a five minute stretch of the half putting the game away.
Washburn turned up the head in the second half hitting 18 of 27 shots including 3 of 4 from 3-point range en route to a 67 percent shooting performance in the second half.
Stutz added 11 more in the frame to lead all scorers with 27 points going 12 of 15 from the field with seven rebounds. Reid had 16 points and De'Andre Washington had 10 points with nine assists.
Pierre Declue had 18 to lead the Blue Tigers. Cedric Ridle, Jr., scored 16 and Derek Stokes had 14.
Washburn finished 37 of 62 from the field for the game hitting 60 percent of its shots while the Blue Tigers were limited to 43 percent shooting on 25 of 58 attempts. The Ichabods held a 34 to 28 advantage on the glass while turning 13 Lincoln turnovers into 23 points. Washburn also tallied 28 assists with only 10 turnovers. 

About Lincoln . . .

The Blue Tigers were picked to finish last by both the media and coaches prior to the start of the MIAA season, Lincoln picked up its first win in 20 games when they won its first conference game beating Truman 77-65 on Feb. 23. Senior guard Pierre DeClue leads the team in scoring averaging 16.6 ppg. Cedric Ridle, Jr. is scoring 11.0 ppg. This season the Blue Tigers are averaging 70.0 ppg while allowing 82.0 ppg. As a team Lincoln is 643 of 1582 from the field hitting 41 percent of its shots while going 134 of 414 from 3-point range for a 32 percent average. Lincoln has been outscored by its opponents in the first half of games this season 1025 to 795.

LU Sports Information -- (Feb. 23, 2011) JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – It took 20 games, but the Lincoln University men's basketball team finally broke through, as four Blue Tigers tallied in double-figures to lead Lincoln to the 77-65 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) victory Wednesday night in front of a packed Jason Gym crowd.
Lincoln (3-22, 1-20 MIAA) roared out of the gates to an eight-point lead, 11-3, as freshman center Tim Carter drilled a jumper in the paint at the 16:19 mark. The Blue Tigers scored 11 straight points after Truman opened the game with a three-pointer, as that would turn out to be the Bulldogs' largest lead of the night.
The lead would stretch to 20, 33-13, on a three-pointer by junior guard Terrell Williams at the 7:57 mark.
A 6-0 run by Truman (7-18, 5-16 MIAA) cut the lead back down to 14 and it would stay that way for the rest of the half before junior center Joshua Keimi-Nunley had a putback layup to close the half and give Lincoln a 43-27 halftime lead.
The lead would reach 20 a couple more times early in the second half, with the latter coming at the 14:06 mark on another three-pointer by Williams.
Truman made the game close again near the seven-minute mark, as they cut the lead to nine, 61-52, at the 7:17 mark on a three-pointer by Tom Norton.
The teams would trade misses on the next possessions before Lincoln helped regain the momentum for good on a three-pointer by junior guard Jimmy Payton for the 64-52 lead.
Junior guard Cedric Ridle, Jr. tallied 19 points to lead the Blue Tigers, as 17 of those points came in the first half, as he also added seven rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Derek Stokes connected on four three-pointers to finish with 18 points. Payton added 16, while senior point guard Pierre DeClue  rounded out the Blue Tigers in double-figures with 11.
Lincoln turned the ball over just nine times to 16 for Truman. Lincoln shot right at 47 percent from the field (31-66), while Truman was held to under 39 percent (38.5, 20-52). Truman attempted 30 three-pointers, while making ten, to Lincoln hitting eight on just 14 attempts.
Lincoln won in all of the miscellaneous categories, including points in the paint (32-18), points off turnovers (23-11), second-chance (17-14), fastbreak (14-8) and bench points (18-14).

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,403-971 (.590 in 2,374 games) in its 105th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the 10th-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 453-203 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .

The Ichabods are 352-65 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
