Ichabods hit the court to face No. 13 Fort Hays State

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will return to action for the first time since an 87-74 win over Missouri Western on Jan. 29 as they will take on Fort Hays State on Feb. 5 in Hays. Washburn will be eyeing program win No. 1,400 also searching for its seventh-straight win entering the game as the hottest team in the MIAA. The Ichabods (13-5, 10-4 MIAA) are in third place in the MIAA standings. Fort Hays State topped Missouri Western on Feb. 3 at home 79-63. The game will be a match up of the second and third teams in the MIAA standings as the Ichabods enter the contest one game behind the Tigers in the conference race. The Tigers are also the only team to beat Washburn in Lee Arena this season. The Ichabods are looking to become the ninth school in NCAA Division II history to reach the 1,400-win plateau. Following the game with the Tigers, the Ichabods will have two more road contests beginning with four the Ichabods' seven remaining regular season games to be played on the road.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 691-283 (.710) overall and he has 450 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 404-76 (.840) record going 350-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 691 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 28-25 against Fort Hays State.
Fort Hays State head coach Mark Johnson is in his 10th season as head coach of the Tigers. Johnson became the 14th men's basketball coach in the school's history on July 13, 2001. He has compiled a career record of 199-85 at Fort Hays State. He ranks among the top 20 active NCAA Division II men's basketball coaches in winning percentage (.688). Johnson has guided the Tigers to four NCAA Tournament appearances in his time at FHSU.  He is 9-2 against the Ichabods.
   
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 29, 2011) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods remained the hottest team in the MIAA with their sixth straight win improving to 13-5 and 10-4 in MIAA play with an 87-74 win over Missouri Western Saturday night in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods trailed by no more than four points in the first half and did not trail at after a jumper by Brandon Scaife staking Washburn to an 18-17 lead with 13:49 to go in the game as the Ichabods would go on to lead by as many as 12 late in the first half. The Ichabods pushed the lead to seven at 24-17 before the Griffons cut the lead back to two at 24-22 under the 10 minute media timeout. The Ichabods pushed the lead back to eight on an 8-0 mini run, but again the Griffons cut the lead back to five at 34-29 before the Ichabods took the 45-35 lead into the break.
The Griffons cut the lead to nine at 46-37 with 17:46 to play in the game before Washburn would go on a 11-3 run after a pair of free throws by Logan Stutz, who scored a game-high 30 points. The Ichabods kept the Griffons at bay holding at least a double-digit lead until Missouri Western twice trimmed the lead to eight late in the game at 4:14 remaining and 3:33 remaining but the Ichabods finished the game 5 of 6 from the charity stripe in the final 2:36 to take the 13-point win.
Stutz went over 30 points for the second time this season while adding his fourth double double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. Stutz, who entered the game second in the nation in field goal percentage at 71 percent finished 12 of 15 from the field while going 6 of 7 from the field scoring 18 points in the second half. De'Andre Washington scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half and Nate Daniels scored a season-high 17 points - one shy of his career high shooting 6 of 8 from the field including 3 of 4 from 3-point range.
Jonathan Phelps scored a team-high 17 points off the bench to lead four Griffons in double figures.
Washburn finished the game 33 of 56 shooting 59 percent from the field including a blistering 20 of 33 in the opening stanza for a 61 percent clip. Western finished 24 of 56 for the game for a 43 percent average. Washburn held a 32 to 29 advantage on the glass and outscored the Griffons 50 to 26 in the paint.

Series history with Fort Hays State . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 149th in the series history and Washburn leads 83-65. The series is the third-most played for Washburn behind Emporia State (195) and Pittsburg State (164). Washburn is 15-5 against the Tigers in Lee Arena. Fort Hays State is 4-2 against WU in overtime games. The Ichabods have lost their last six games in Gross Memorial Coliseum and have not won in Hays since an 84-75 victory on Nov. 28, 1998 prior to the Tigers joining the MIAA. The Tigers have won the last four meetings and seven of the last eight overall. The teams have never met in the MIAA Tournament.
 
Last meeting with Fort Hays State . . .
(Dec. 8, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were held to a season-low 58 points in a 70-58 loss to No. 6 Fort Hays State in Lee Arena.
After the teams were knotted at 7-7 with 14:30 to go in the game, the Tigers (9-0, 3-0 MIAA) would go on a 16-2 over the next five minutes building a 14-point lead with a 23-9 lead. Washburn cut the lead to six at 29-23 on a 3-pointer by Robert Sigala, who scored a career-high eight points off the bench before the Tigers would take a nine point lead into the locker room leading 33-24. Both teams struggled in the closing minutes of the half as the Tigers would go the final 2:39 of the half without a field goal while the Ichabods' final field goal of the half was on Sigala's 3-pointer with 4:07 to play in the stanza.
Washburn (5-2, 2-1 MIAA) had 10 turnovers in the opening half leading to 15 points for the Tigers while Forth Hays State committed only four turnovers.
In the second half, the Ichabods cut the lead to eight at 38-30 on a pair of Logan Stutz free throws 2:35 into the half, but the Tigers stretched the lead to as many as 16 at the five minute mark. The Ichabods were trimmed the lead to 10 twice at 64-54 with 2:50 to go and 66-56 with 1:44 to go, but Washburn would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Ichabods were led by Stutz who scored 18 points with eight rebounds taking game-high honors. De'Andrew Washington scored 15 with seven rebounds. The Tigers were led by Dijon Smith who scored 15.  Karron McKenzie had 12 and Dominique Jones chipped in 11.
The Ichabods finished their three-game home stand hitting 18 of 50 from the field while Fort Hays State was 26 of 52. The Ichabods were 16 of 23 from the line and the Tigers finished 13 of 16. Washburn had three of its 13 total turnovers in the first half leading to 15 points for the Tigers. Washburn did hold a 33 to 30 advantage on the glass holding the Tigers to five offensive rebounds. 

About Fort Hays State . . .

The Tigers are 18-3 and 12-3 in the conference while sitting at No. 13 in the NABC Top 25 coaches poll. Dominique Jones leads the team in scoring with 17.7 ppg with nearly six assists per game. Ken Bowman is scoring 13.1 ppg along with a team-high 7.1 rpg while shooting 74 percent from the field hitting 40 of 54 attempts. Dijon Smith is scoring 14.4 ppg, Ken Brown is scoring 11.5 ppg and Corbin Kuntzsch is scoring 10.7 ppg. Overall the Tigers have attempted 24 more free throws than their opponents (475 to 451) and average 83.8 ppg while allowing 68.6 ppg. Opponents are shooting 40 percent from the field while the Tigers are shooting 52 percent from the field this season.  

Last time out for Fort Hays State . . .
FHSU Sports Information -- (Feb. 3, 2010) The No. 13 ranked FHSU men's basketball team posted a 79-63 win over Missouri Western on Thursday night (Feb. 3) to move to 18-3 overall and 12-3 in the MIAA.
The Tigers built a 10-point halftime lead, then eventally led by 22 in the second half to coast to the victory. Fort Hays State shot 50 percent from the field, while Missouri Western (9-10 overall, 7-7 MIAA) shot 42.6 percent from the field.
Ken Bowman led all scorers, nearly posting a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. He also tied for a team-high two blocked shots. Dijon Smith paired with him in the post for 17 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Both shot 7-of-10 from the field. Matt Simmons had a double-double off the bench with a career-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds. The only three forwards on the team combined for 50 of the team's 79 points, helping the team to 46 points in the paint.
Even though he had an off night scoring, Dominique Jones busted out a career-high 13 assists and four steals. The 13 assists are sixth most in a single game in Fort Hays State history.
Missouri Western was without its top two scorers due to a violation of team rules. Adrian Thomas scored a team-high 16 points, followed by Lavonte Douglas with 15 points and TJ Johnson with 13.
The Tigers remain a game back of Missouri Southern in the MIAA standings after the Lions defeated Lincoln University on Thursday night.

Ichabods in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings . . .
(Feb. 2, 2011) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Washburn Ichabods remained seventh in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings which were released today by the NCAA. The regional rankings will be released each Wednesday for the remainder of the season with the top eight teams in the final rankings on Sunday, March 6 qualifying for the South Central Regional at a campus site to be determined.
