Lady Blues look to get back on track
The 16th-ranked Lady Blues look to get back on the winning track as they continue their three-game road trip at Central Missouri on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
The last time out, Washburn allowed a season-high 11 three-point field goals and fell 68-59 at Fort Hays State on Saturday. Laura Kinderknecht led Washburn with a career-high 18 points, while Megan Lassley recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
The Lady Blues are led by three players averaging in double figures. Cassie Lombardino leads the team at 16.4 points per game. Stevi Schultz is averaging 14.9, while Laura Kinderknecht chips in 10.7 points per outing.
Washburn will take on a Central Missouri squad that is coming off of a 73-54 win over Lincoln on Saturday afternoon and has won four of its last five games. The Lady Blues beat the Jennies 86-68 in Topeka back on December 31.

Lady Blues on the air . . .
The Lady Blues game at Central Missouri will be broadcast on 106.9 FM KTPK Topeka. Mark Elliott will be calling the play-by-play action with Bruce Steinbrock providing the color-commentary. The Coaches . . .
Washburn head coach Ron McHenry has posted a 283-57 (.832) overall record and a 156-41 (.792) record in the MIAA with six MIAA regular season championships and the 2005 NCAA National Championship during his 11 seasons as head coach. McHenry has also led the Lady Blues to six MIAA Postseason Tournament titles, including six of the eight played in Kansas City. McHenry has the highest winning percentage (.838) in MIAA history of coaches who have at least 200 wins.
He was named the Lady Blues head coach prior to the 2000-01 season. He leads the country among active women's NCAA Division II Coaches in winning percentage. McHenry was named the MIAA's Coach of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2010 and the Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year in 2005. (complete bio on page 6 of notes.)
Central Missouri head coach Dave Slifer, is in his seventh season leading the Jennies. His record at Central Missouri stands at 121-79, while his career record in his 21st season as a head coach stands at 504-178. Last season, the Mount Mercy graduate led the Jennies to a 19-12 overall record and a third place finish in the MIAA at 13-7. UCM qualified for the South Central Regional where they fell to Washburn in the first round.

Last time out for the Lady Blues . . .
February 5, 2011 - HAYS, Kan. – The 11th-ranked Lady Blues allowed a season-high 11 three-point field goals and fell 68-59 at Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon. The loss was Washburn's first against Fort Hays State since 1994, snapping a streak of 16 straight wins for the Lady Blues.
Washburn (15-4, 11-4 MIAA) grabbed a brief lead at 4-3 a minute and a half into the game, but Fort Hays State (11-9, 8-8 MIAA) responded with two quick buckets to regain the lead. The Tigers led 15-12 with 13:22 to play when each team was whistled for a foul. Fort Hays State's Janel Durler was charged with an intentional foul after an elbow up high and Washburn's Naudia Campbell was issued a technical in return. After the stoppage in play and free throws for each team the lead was 16-14.
A pair of free throws from Megan Lassley tied the game at 16 with 12:30 to play, but FHSU went on a 12-0 run over the next 6:06 to take a 28-16 lead.
The Lady Blues responded with four straight threes and tied the game at 28 with 3:14 to play in the half. A 7-1 run by Fort Hays put the Tigers in front 35-29 with 1:29 remaining in the opening period. Laura Kinderknecht hit a pair from the charity stripe with 42 ticks left and the Tigers led 35-31 at the break.
A pair of baskets out of the break tied the game at 35 and Washburn had a couple of chances to grab the lead, but couldn't. The teams traded buckets before a three by Crista Bechard put FHSU back in front 40-37 with 15:49 to play in the game. That three sparked an 8-0 run to put Fort Hays State up 45-37. A Kinderknecht layup with 12:37 to play snapped the run and cut the lead to six.
After an FHSU bucket the Lady Blues got back-to-back layups from Alyssa Mullen and Dana Elliott to pull within four at 47-43 with 10:18 to play. An 8-2 run over the next four minutes pushed the FHSU lead to 10 at 55-45. A 12-4 run by the Lady Blues cut the lead to a pair at 59-57 with 1:44 to play in the game, but the Tigers answered with another three and outscored the Lady Blues 11-2 the rest of the way for the win.
Kinderknecht led Washburn with a career-high 18 points to go along with five assists. Lassley recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Mullen also had 10 boards for the Lady Blues, who were out-rebounded 52-34, and gave up 18 offensive boards to FHSU.
The Lady Blues shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the floor and 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from beyond the arc. WU was 11-of-16 from the foul line for 68.8 percent.
The Tigers were led by a pair of players in double figures. Bechard scored 18 and Traci Keyser added 16. Kara McFarland had a game-high 11 rebounds to pace Fort Hays State.
FHSU shot 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the floor and 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from three-point range. The Tigers were 15-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Washburn is now 11-1 against FHSU under Ron McHenry. The Lady Blues are back in action Wednesday night at Central Missouri at 5:30 p.m.

Washburn/Central Missouri series notes . . .
Washburn leads the series with Central Missouri 34-13 and the Lady Blues are 21-4 against the Jennies under Ron McHenry. after the 86-68 win in Topeka back on December 31. The Blues have won six straight games in the series and 20 of the past 22 meetings. The Lady Blues were 4-0 against UCM last season.

About Central Missouri . . .
The Jennies enter the game at 12-10 overall, 8-8 in MIAA and winners in four of their last five games. UCM rebounded from a loss at Emporia State on Wednesday with a 73-54 win over Lincoln on Saturday afternoon.
Central Missouri is led in scoring by three players in double figures. Rebecca Roberts leads the team at 12.9 points per game. Kara Fleming pours in 11.8 points per outing in addition to dishing out 6.0 assists per game. Nicole Caddell is the other Jennie averaging in double figures at 11.6 per outing.
UCM averages 68.7 points per game and gives up 64.7, while the Jennies shoot 41.1 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from three-point range. Opponents shoot 38.6 percent from the floor and 32.6 percent from beyond the arc.
The Jennies are out-rebounding their opponents 40.7-34.6, but they've committed 29 more turnovers than their opponents and are averaging almost 18 turnovers per game.

Last Time out for Central Missouri . . .
UCM Sports Info. - February 5, 2011 - Central Missouri played a strong defense as it rolled to a 73-54 victory over Lincoln at home on Saturday. The Jennies had only nine turnovers and nine fouls on the day, both season lows.
Lincoln only made three shots from the line and three from beyond the arc, the Blue Tigers also had a .429 free throw percentage on the day. All three of those numbers are season lows for UCM opponents.
The Jennies (12-10, 8-8 MIAA) got on the board first on a jumper by junior Renae Shippy at 19:14 and no one scored again until senior Kara Fleming hit a pair of free throws at 15:02 to make the score 4-0. Lincoln (2-18, 1-15 MIAA) finally got on the board on a layup to cut its deficit in half at 14:40. Both teams combined going 1-for-18 from the floor in the first five minutes of play.
Central Missouri went up by 10, its largest of the half, at 10:40 on a layup by junior Nicole Caddell that put the score at 15-5. Both teams shared a three, as UCM went back up by 10, only to allow the Blue Tigers to tie the score at 24 each on a layup with 2:40 remaining in the half.
Lincoln tied the score again, at 28 with 36 seconds left, but went into the locker rooms with a 30-28 deficit after giving up a layup to senior Becca Roberts.
There were two ties and no lead changes in the half, with Central Missouri taking a 10-point lead twice. UCM went 11-for-30 (.367) from the floor, 2-for-11 (.182) from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 (100) from the line, while the Blue Tigers were .419 (13-31), .333 (2-6), and 0.0 (0-0) from the same spots, respectively. The Jennies had an 8-2 advantage in points off turnovers and a 15-3 edge in points from their bench, whereas LU had a 20-14 margin in points in the paint and 6-2 in second chance points.
Freshman Kiersten Orton led the Jennies with seven points, going three-for-6 from the floor. She also grabbed five rebounds. Shippy and Caddell both tallied six points.
Lincoln came out of the intermission by hitting its first shot and taking its first lead after making a layup and a pair of free throws with 18:47 on the clock. Roberts made a layup on the Jennies pursuing possession that put the score at 32 each. The Blue Tigers then tied the game for a fifth time, 34 apiece, only to allowing UCM to go on a 10-2 run that put the score at 44-36 with 13:00 left of regulation.
The Blue Tigers pulled to within five points, 51-46, before Central Missouri went on a 16-2 run in the next 4:22 that put the score at 67-48 with 3:10 on the clock. The Jennies took their biggest lead of the game, 21, after a layup by junior Kelce Goebel with 39 seconds to play that made the score 73-52.
There were three ties and two lead changes in the half, as Central Missouri had its biggest lead of 21 late in the game and Lincoln took an early lead of two. The Jennies had a 12-2 advantage in points off turnovers, 5-4 in second chance points and a 20-0 points off the bench. Lincoln had an 18-16 margin in points in the paint and both teams scored four points on fast breaks.
In the game, Central Missouri went 24-for-60 (.400) from the floor, 3-for-13 (.231) from beyond the arc and 3-for-7 (.429) at the line while Lincoln was .426 (26-61), .346 (9-26), and .667 (12-18) from the same spots, respectively.
Caddell led the Jennies with 15 points in the game, going 7-for-11 from the floor. She also grabbed six rebounds. Roberts and Fleming both had 10 points each and Shippy and Orton both tallied nine.

Last Meeting Between Washburn and Central Missouri . . .
December 31, 2010 - TOPEKA, Kan. --   The Lady Blues scored at will on Central Missouri, building a lead and never letting up on their way to a 86-68 victory Friday afternoon inside Lee Arena. Washburn is back in action on Wednesday at home against Southwest Baptist at 5:30 p.m.
Cassie Lombardino and Stevi Schultz started the game off with back to back lay ups to put Washburn (9-1, 5-1 MIAA) up 4-0 early.  Rebecca Roberts got the Jennies (6-6, 2-4 MIAA) on the board early scoring their first four points of the game, but Stevi Schultz and Laura Kinderknecht hit back to back three pointers igniting a 11-2 run to take control of the game with a 15-4 lead with 15:46 in the first half.
The Jennies cut in to the lead, 18-9, with a lay up by Kara Fleming and a three pointer by Saraethea Brown, but the Jennies weren't able to get closer then nine.  Late in the first half with the Lady Blues leading 37-19 the Jennies bench got called for a technical. The Lady Blues went in to half leading 44-23.
Jennies forward Nicole Caddell hit the first shot of the second half and Roberts followed it up with her own basket making the score 44-27.
The Lady Blues kept the Jennies at bay throughout the second half with a barrage of three pointers. Doing most of the damage from beyond the arc for the Lady Blues was Kinderknecht, she connected on five of her nine attempts.  Her five three pointers are a career high.
Stevi Schultz led all scorers with 22 while Kinderknecht helped out with 15.  Alyssa Mullen had another solid game for the Lady Blues with nine points, six rebounds, and five assists.
The Lady Blues shot 46% from the floor, 30-of-64 and were 13-of-29 from beyond the arc.   The 13 three pointers was a season high. The Jennies shot 41% from the floor, 23-of-55 while only shooting 27% from three point range, 6-of-22.
Caddell led the Jennies with 13 points and nine rebounds. Roberts had 12 points, while Fleming and Taylor Hanson each chipped in 11.

A Win Would . . .
A win would give the Lady Blues a 16-4 record for the first time since the 2007-08 season ... give Washburn a sweep in the season series with Central Missouri and seven straight wins over the Jennies ... give WU an 12-4 MIAA record ... give Washburn a 765-340 record in 42 years of basketball.

A Loss Would . . .
A loss would give the Lady Blues an 15-5 record for the first time since the 2001-02 season ... drop the Lady Blues to 11-5 in the MIAA ... snap Washburn's six-game winning streak against Central Missouri ... give Washburn five regular season losses for the first time since 2007-08 ... give Washburn a 764-341 record in 42 years of basketball.

Lady Blues Following a Loss . . .
The Lady Blues are 38-13 following a loss during the Ron McHenry era and 2-1 following a loss this season after rebounding from two straight losses to beat Missouri Western 95-74 two weeks ago. Washburn beat Central Missouri 86-68 after suffering the first loss of the season to Missouri Western.

Against Ranked Opponents . . .
The Lady Blues are 39-24 when facing a ranked opponent under Ron McHenry, including 1-1 this season. Washburn beat then-No. 10 Emporia State 66-60 on Jan. 15 and lost at No. 23 Northwest Missouri 71-63 on Wednesday night. Washburn was 2-1 against ranked competition last year and the Lady Blues are 12-6 against ranked teams over the past four seasons.

Lady Blues in The MIAA . . .
The Lady Blues are 156-41 (.792) under head coach Ron McHenry in MIAA games and 280-94 (.749) all-time in conference play.  

Lady Blues in Lee Arena . . .
In their 27th season in Lee Arena, the Lady Blues are 336-59 (.851) overall at home. Washburn won their 300th game against Emporia State on Feb. 23, 2008.
The longest winning streak was 44 games from Dec. 1, 1990 to March 20, 1993.
The Lady Blues have won 47 straight regular season non-conference games in Lee Arena. The last home loss to a non-conference team in the regular season was to Missouri-St. Louis in a 59-51 setback on Dec. 30, 2000.
Washburn is 145-14 (.912) in home games under Ron McHenry. Five of the 14 losses came in his first year on the Lady Blues bench. In the last 10 seasons, Washburn is 137-9 (.938).

Lady Blues on the road . . .
The Lady Blues are 80-34 (.702) on the road under Ron McHenry, including 3-4 this season. Washburn's best road record under McHenry was 8-0 during the 2005-06 season. The Lady Blues were 10-1 on the road last season, including 9-1 during MIAA play.

Lady Blues History . . .
Washburn is 764-340 (.692 in 1,104 games) in its 42nd season of intercollegiate action. The Lady Blues have won seven MIAA regular season titles and eight MIAA postseason tournament championships since becoming eligible for conference championships in 1990-91.

Washburn dropped five spots to No. 16 in the latest WBCA USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Blues were No. 10 in the final USA Today/ESPN Top 25 WBCA Coaches Poll of the 2009-10 season.
Overall, Washburn has received votes in the last 147 consecutive polls and has been ranked in the top 25 in 131 consecutive polls, the longest active streak in NCAA-II.

The Lady Blues wrap up their three game road trip at Southwest Baptist on Saturday. Washburn returns home on Monday, Feb. 14 to make up the game with Truman that was postponed from February 2 due to the winter storm that moved through the Midwest.
The WBCA Pink Zone game is Thursday, Feb. 17 against Missouri Southern. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The first 500 fans will receive pink Lady Blues basketball t-shirts compliments of St. Francis Health Center and Washburn athletics.
