The Washburn Ichabods will open the MIAA Tournament for the second time in three years facing Emporia State in a postseason edition of the Turnpike Tussle on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. Washburn (18-8) is coming off a 69-67 win at Lincoln while the Hornets (15-13) knocked off No. 17-ranked Fort Hays State 81-77 last time out. The Ichabods and the Hornets met on Feb. 23 with the Ichabods falling 73-68 in Topeka. Washburn won the first meeting between the teams 69-56 in Emporia on Jan. 15. The winner of this game will advance to face the winner of the Fort Hays State/Missouri Western game at 2:15 p.m. on March 5.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 696-286 (.710) overall and he has 455 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has led the Ichabods to the MIAA Tournament 19 times collecting a all-time league-best 29 wins going 29-14 with a .675 winning percentage during tournament play. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 406-77 (.840) record going 352-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 695 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 46-20 against Emporia State.
Emporia State's David Moe is 160-124 in his tenth season at ESU. He is the third-winningest coach in ESU history behind Gus Fish and Ron Slaymaker. He led ESU to appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007 and winning seasons in six of the last eight years. He is 12-11 against the Ichabods.

(Feb. 26) JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods let a 11-point second half lead slip away and survived a potential 3-point game-winning shot by Lincoln at the buzzer to wrap up the regular season with a 69-67 win over the Blue Tigers.
Alex North broke a 62-all tie with 3:20 remaining on a 3-pointer from the corner and then pushed Washburn's lead to five on the Ichabods' next possession in a jumper off the glass en route to a career-high 13 points in his first start of the season.
The Ichabods led by eight with 1:38 to go after a free throw by
Jeff Reid while
Mitch Allen added one free throw of his own. A lay up by Cedric Riddle, Jr. cut the Ichabod lead to two at 69-67 sitting up the potential game-winner by the Blue Tigers which went off the rim.
Five different Ichabods scored in double figures led by
De'Andre Washington followed by North's 13 scoring 11 in the second half.
Brandon Scaife scored a career-high 11 points as well.
Jeff Reid had 11 and
Jadarren Mumpfield scored 10. Washington and Mumpfield each had seven assists with Washington collecting a team-high six rebounds.
Riddle scored 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting and Pierre DeClue scored 14 to pace the Blue Tigers.
Washburn shot 62 percent from the field hitting 28 of 45 from the field while the Blue Tigers were 27 of 46 hitting 59 percent in the game.
The Ichabods were playing without
Logan Stutz, who was out with an injury and
Bobby Chipman, who will miss the remainder of the season with his knee injury suffered last week.
Series history with Emporia State. . .
Thursday's meeting will be the 196th meeting between these two schools and ESU leads the all-time series 98-97. This is the most-played series for Washburn. The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. This will be the 66th straight year they have played each other at least once. Washburn is 26-30 all-time in White Auditorium since home-away records were first kept beginning in 1956-57. The Ichabods are 19-8 against the Hornets in Lee Arena. Washburn is 25-13 against ESU in MIAA games. Washburn is 3-0 against ESU in MIAA Postseason tournament games. Against the Hornets in Kansas City, the teams have met twice with the Ichabods winning both meetings - a 78-71 win on Mach 4, 2005 and an 88-82 win on March 5, 2009 - both quarterfinal match ups. The Ichabods have won three of the last five overall.
Last meeting with Emporia State . . .
(Jan. 23, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped their home finale 73-68 to Emporia State in Lee Arena.
Neither team led by more than seven in a game which saw 19 lead changes and 10 ties in the game. ESU broke a 60-all tie with 3:30 to go on a 3-pointer by Xavier Burnett, who followed the three with a free throw with 2:54 to go putting the Hornets up four. Burnette added another three stretching the ESU lead to seven with 2:25 to go in the game.
Jadarren Mumpfield cut the lead to five with 1:59 to go with a couple of free throws and
Alex North trimmed the lead back to three with 1:03 to play. After the teams traded turnovers, ESU's Michael Tyler pushed the Hornet lead back to five with 26 seconds to play before
De'Andre Washington cut the lead back to two with 14 seconds to go. Taylor Euler hit a pair of free throws staking ESU to a four point lead with nine seconds to go. Washington drove to the basket and was fouled on the drive hitting the first free throw and missing the second but the Ichabods could not recover the rebound as ESU hit two more free throws to take the five-point win.
Washington led the Ichabods with 29 points on 11 of 18 shooting from the field including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Stutz finished with 17 points. Xavier Burnett led the Hornets with 19 points.
The Ichabods finished 47 percent from the field hitting 24 of 51 shots while ESU was 46 percent connecting on 25 of 54 shots. Washburn was outrebounded 32 to 27.
About Emporia State . . .
The Hornets are 15-13 overall finished 12-10 in MIAA play after knocking off No. 17-ranked Fort Hays State in their regular season finale 81-77. The Hornets have won their last four games after losing the four games before starting their most recent winning streak. Xavier Burnette leads the team in scoring with 14.0 ppg pacing four Hornets in double figure scoring along with Michael Tyler at 12.4 ppg, Adam Holthaus with 11.4 ppg and Matt Boswell with 10.9 ppg. The Hornets are averaging 70.8 ppg while allowing 72.3 ppg. They are -3.4 in rebound margin this season. From the field ESU is 693 of 1516 hitting 46 percent and from 3-point range they are 204 of 554 for 37 percent. ESU has attempted 36 more free throws than its opponents hitting 393 of 559. Emporia State is 4-8 on the road this season and 0-2 on neutral courts.

ESU Sports Information -- (Feb. 26, 2011) February 26, 2011 -- The Emporia State men trailed for just 23 seconds in an 81-77 upset win over #17 Fort Hays State. Taylor Euler scored nine points in the final 1:01 to help the Hornets ice the victory.
ESU jumped ahead early leading by an 18-9 margin at one point early in the first half. ESU shot .484 in the first half while holding FHSU to just .355 going into the break. ESU would hold a 36-28 halftime lead as they hit four three pointers early.
In the second half FHSU would close the gap and at one point led by two points before ESU closed out the game. Euler finished in double figures with 18 points on the night wand was joined by Michael Tyler who also added 18 points. Adam Holthaus finished with 12 points as all eight Hornets seniors scored or pulled down a rebound in the contest.

• The Ichabods are 29-14 all-time in the MIAA Championship Tournament.

Logan Stutz became the first Ichabod to be named first team all-MIAA since the 2004-05 season after he was selected to the all-conference basketball team voted on by the league coaches. Fellow senior
De'Andre Washington was named second team all-MIAA.
Stutz led the Ichabods and the league in scoring with 20.1 ppg while pulling down a team-high 6.8 rpg, which was sixth in the league. Stutz also leads the MIAA in field goal percentage hitting 69 percent of his shots, which is third in the nation as well. He is also 10th in the MIAA in blocks. His 38 points against Grand Canyon earlier this season was the highest point total in the MIAA this season and it was the sixth-best tally in Washburn history. He was the first all-MIAA pick for the Ichabods since the 2004-05 season when Travis Robbins earned first team as well as league MVP honors. Stutz's 502 points this season rank ninth on the Washburn all-time senior scoring chart and his scoring average is fifth on the senior scoring average listing.
Washington tied for sixth in the conference in scoring with a 17.3 ppg average while finishing ninth in rebounds with 6.4 per game. He finished fourth in the league in assists with 5.0 per game and fifth in 3-point field goals made per game with 2.0. Washington's 134 assists this season is fifth on Washburn's senior assist chart.
