TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabod baseball team split its home-opening MIAA doubleheader with Southwest Baptist on Friday afternoon at Falley Field. The 'Bods dropped the opener 8-3 in extra innings, but took the nightcap 2-1 to earn the split.
Southwest Baptist (3-5, 2-4 MIAA) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game with one with a single run in the second inning and two in the third. Washburn (4-5, 4-2 MIAA) rallied to tie the game and forced extra innings. The Ichabods scored once in the fifth on
Ben Wilson's first career home run. WU scored two more times in the sixth on a two-run single from
Andy Petz.
The went to an extra frame, but the Bearcats plated five runs in the top of the eight to claim the game one win.
Brett Ash (1-2) took the loss allowing eight runs on 14 hits in 7.1 innings pitched. He walked two and struck out nine. Jared Berman (1-2) earned the complete-game win for SBU giving up three runs on four hits in eight innings.
Washburn jumped on top in game two with a single run in the first inning on a
Brian Gomez sacrifice fly. The Bearcats tied the game at 1-1in the fourth, but a
Marcus Peavler RBI single brought home
Wyatt Hall with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Mitch List (2-0) earned the win for WU allowing two hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Starter
Derek Fogel allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings.
Mike Nielebeck (0-1) took the loss for the Bearcats allowing one run on two hits in .1 innings of relief.
The series wraps up with a doubleheader at noon on Sunday.
