EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod basketball season came to an end with an overtime heartbreaking loss to Missouri Southern in the NCAA South Central Regional Quarterfinals with an 82-79 loss ending their season 18-10.
Trailing 70-67 after Missouri Southern's Marquis Addison with four seconds to go, Washburn's
De'Andre Washington answered with one of his own with one second left sending the game into overtime. The game marked the second time in NCAA play the Ichabods and the Lions needed the extra five minutes to decide a winner as the Lions also took a 79-73 win in Joplin during the 2000 NCAA South Central Regional.
In the overtime frame, the Ichabods took an early lead on a free throw by
Logan Stutz putting Washburn up 71-70. Washburn stretched the lead to three after the teams traded baskets on a free throw by
Virgil Philistin at 78-75 with 45 seconds to go. A jumper by Missouri Southern's Jason Adams cut the lead to one, but Stutz hit a free throw putting Washburn up two at 79-77. Adams then banked a 3-pointer off the glass to put the Lions up for good. The Ichabods turned it over on their next possession and the Lions hit both free throws after an Ichabod foul. Washburn ten missed a three with six seconds remaining and they did not get off another shot ending the chance at a tie and a second overtime.
Stutz led the Ichabods with 28 points and 13 rebounds recording his ninth double double of his Washburn career and the seventh of the season. His 24 free throw attempts were one shy of the school record held by Jerry Milner, who attempted 25 during the 1958-59 season. Stutz's 28 points were the highest by an Ichabod in NCAA Postseason play since Ewan Auguste scored 29 in the NCAA National Semfinals in a win over Western Washington in Bakersfield, Calif. Washington finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds notching his 16 double double of his Washburn career.
Adams finished with 29 points to lead the Lions while Skyler Bowlin scored 22 before fouling out.
After holding the Lions to 35 percent shooting in the first half, the Lions hit 10 of 20 shots in the second half including 17 of 25 free throws while the Ichabods shot 39 percent in both halves while going 12 of 18 from the charity stripe in the second half. In the overtime frame, the Ichabods were 1 of 4 from the field and 7 of 14 from the free throw line while the Lions were 3 of 7 from the field and 5 of 8 from the free throw line.
The Ichabods finished 27 of 46 from the free throw line in the game.
There were 18 lead changes in the game and 13 score ties with Washburn leading by eight late in the first half and the Lions leading the Ichabods by seven early in the first after scoring the first seven points of the game.
