Ichabods split MIAA opening DH at Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods split their MIAA-opening doubleheader with Truman State on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Park. Washburn won the opener 6-1 before falling 5-3 in the nightcap. The series wraps up with a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.

The Ichabods (1-4, 1-1 MIAA) opened the scoring with a single run in the third. Cameron Kasel had a two-out RBI single that plated Brian Gomez to put WU in front. The 'Bods added three more runs in the fifith to go in front 4-0. Andy Petz had a two-run single and later scored on an RBI single by Dane Simoneau.

Washburn added two more runs in the top of the seventh. Simoneau drove in his second run of the game and later scored on a double by Tyler Bean. Truman (2-4, 1-1 MIAA) added one run in the bottom of the inning, but the 'Bods took the opener 6-1.

Brett Ash (1-1) earned the win tossing a complete-game four-hitter. He allowed one unearned run and struck out three, while walking three.

Ryan Trimble (0-2) took the loss for Truman giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings pitched. He walked two and struck out five.

The Ichabods took a 1-0 lead after one inning game two. Petz had a sacrifice fly to get WU on the board.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good with four runs in the third inning off starter Derek Fogel.

Washburn cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the sixth. Boone Plager singled and scored when Petz belted his first home run of the season.

Truman added a single insurance run in the eighth and held on for the 5-3 win.

Fogel (0-1) took the loss for Washburn giving up four runs on six hits and four walks in five innings of work. Kerry Schachenmeyer allowed one run on one hit in three innings of relief.

Jarrett Eiskina (1-0) earned the win for TSU. He tossed eight innings allowing three runs on five hits and struck out eight. Chris Allard tossed a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.
