Ichabods sweep Truman to close out series

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods swept an MIAA doubleheader from Truman State to close out their series at Bulldog Park. The 'Bods took game one 5-4 in eight innings and shutout TSU 7-0 in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

Washburn (3-4, 3-1 MIAA) got on the board with a single run in the top of the first when Dane Simoneau singled home Boone Plager. Truman (2-6, 1-3 MIAA) scored two runs in the second and one in the third off starter Raul Guevara to take a 3-1 lead.

The Ichabods tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth on Andy Petz's second home run in as many games, but the Bulldogs plated one run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead 4-3. WU forced extra innings with one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Plager and scored the winning run in the eighth when Marcus Peavler singled home Wyatt Hall.

Mitch List (1-0) earned the win tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Guevara gave up four runs on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked four.

Chris Allard (0-1) took the loss for Truman allowing two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.

Petz and Simoneau each finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

Washburn jumped out early again in game two scoring one run in the first on a Simoneau RBI and added three more in the third. Petz tripled home two runs and later scored on a Simoneau sacrifice fly.

The Ichabods tacked on one run in the sixth when Matt Raabe doubled home Simoneau and two more in the seventh. Travis Cruz led off with a walk and later scored on wild pitch and Brian Gomez singled home Plager with the final run of the game.

Daren Parker (1-0) tossed a complete game six-hitter to earn the win. He walked two and struck out four on the way to his first win of the season and first career complete game.

Kyle Veazey (0-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs giving up five runs on 10 hits in five innings for work.

Gomez finished the game 4-for-4 and Plager added three hits, while Petz and Simoneau each drove in a pair of runs.

The Ichabods return to the diamond on Friday afternoon as they host Southwest Baptist at 3 p.m. at Falley Field in the home opener.
