Ichabods to face #9 Lions in NCAA action Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will make their first NCAA postseason appearance since the 2004-05 season and their 11th overall when they will face MIAA regular season champion Missouri Southern on Saturday, March 12 in Edmond, Okla., inside Central Oklahoma's Hamilton Field House. The Ichabods and the Lions split the two MIAA regular season meetings with the Lions winning 90-73 in Joplin, while the Ichabods topped the Lions 71-66 in Topeka. The meeting will be the second between the two schools in NCAA play as the Lions picked up a 79-73 overtime win in Joplin on March 10, 2000. The Ichabods are 2-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament play in games in Edmond last appearing in the 1993 tournament topping both Central Oklahoma and Eastern New Mexico to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 696-287 (.710) overall and he has 455 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has led the Ichabods to the MIAA Tournament 19 times collecting a all-time league-best 29 wins going 29-15 with a .675 winning percentage during tournament play. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 406-77 (.840) record going 352-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 695 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 38-20 all-time against Missouri Southern.
Missouri Southern head coach Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 18 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament berths (13 straight) and two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1999-00 Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year, he holds a career record of 352-274 (.559) at Southern, and is the winningest head coach in Lions basketball history in his 22nd season. A 1978 graduate of Southern, he has led Southern to seven 20-win seasons.
    
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(March 3, 2011) KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell in their opening game of the 2011 MIAA Tournament suffering a 67-61 loss to Emporia State.
Washburn trailed by one at the break at 34-33 after ESU shot 52 percent in the first half compared to the Ichabods' 46 percent on 11 of 24 shooting. To start the second half, Washburn opened up a five-point lead on three different occassions with the final time coming at 14:09 remaining in the game on a lay up by Logan Stutz. Emporia State tied the score at 47 with 11:45 to play before Washburn's Mitch Allen hit a 3-pointer putting the Ichabods up 50-47.
The Hornets took the lead for good on their next possession after a pair of free throws by Robert Moores giving ESU a 51-50 lead with 9:38 to go in the game. Emporia would lead by as many as nine points before the Ichaobds cut the margin back to three with 2:20 to go after Virgil Philistin hit two free throws.
A free throw by Xavier Burnette stretched ESU's lead back to four but the Ichabods would missed their final five shots from the field and ESU was 2 of 4 from the free throw line to take the six-point win.
Jeff Reid led four Ichabods in double figures with 11 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field. De'Andre Washington, Logan Stutz and Philistin each scored 10.
Robert Moores led the Hornets with 19 points.
ESU held a 20 of 32 advantage in free throws while the Ichabods were 10 of 19 during the game. Washburn out rebounded the Hornets 37 to 31 including 14 offensive rebounds leading to nine second chance points. 

Series history with Missouri Southern . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 70th between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69. Washburn leads the all-time series 45-24.  Washburn is 22-12 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-10 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90. The Ichabods have lost five in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a 60-56 win. The two teams have met at least once a year since 1976-77. The Ichabods are 3-2 against the Lions in the MIAA Tournament. In games played in Topeka, the Ichabods are 27-8 overall and 20-5 in games played in Lee Arena. The teams have only met once in the NCAA Tournament - on March 10, 2000 when the Lions picked up a 79-73 overtime win in Joplin.

Last meeting with Missouri Southern . . .
(Feb. 17, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. -- Ichabod senior De'Andre Washington scored Washburn's final six points all from the free throw line in a 71-66 win over the No. 8-ranked Missouri Southern Lions Thursday night in Lee Arena.
After the ninth tie score of the game, Jadarren Mumpfield broke the deadlock with a 3-pointer putting Washburn up 65-62 with 2:43 to play. But the Lions (20-3, 16-3 MIAA) cut the Ichabod lead back to one after a pair of free throws by Marquis Addison with 2:25 remaining in the game. Following a pair of free throws by Washington putting Washburn back up two with 1:53 to go, the Lions again went to the charity stripe and Jason Adams connected on two tosses with 25 seconds left trimming the Ichabod lead back to one. After a foul by the Lions, Washington went back to the line to hit two more with 23 seconds left staking the Ichabods to a 69-66 lead. A 3-point attempt by Adams was off the mark and Washington pulled down the rebound with 12 seconds left hitting both free throws putting Washburn up five at 71-66. Skyler Bowlin's 3-point attempt rimmed out and Washington picked up his game-high 12th and final rebound of the night dribbling out the clock for the win.
The win was the Ichabods' highest win over a ranked opponent since they knocked off a then-No.3-ranked Central Missouri in the first round of the 2010 MIAA Championship Tournament in Kansas City.
In the first half, the teams entered the locker room tied at 35 after the Lions' Adams hit a pair of free throws with 0.8 left on the first half clock.
Logan Stutz tied for game-high honors with Missouri Southern's Keane Thomann who each scored 20 points. Stutz recorded his sixth double double of the season and the eighth of his career adding 10 rebounds. Stutz also recorded a career-high five steals. Washington had 12 points with 12 rebounds and nine assists in the game. Jeff Reid scored 11 points and Mumpfield scored 10. Alex North recorded career-highs of nine points, nine rebounds playing 29 minutes.
Washburn was outshot by the Lions 51 percent to 37 percent as the Lions finished 23 of 45 from the field while the Ichabods were 25 of 68. Washburn dominated on the glass outrebounding the Lions 45 to 26 including a 24 to 4 advantage on the offensive boards. The Ichabods turned the advantage into a 21 to 5 edge in second chance points.

The last meeting with Missouri Southern in NCAA Play . . .
March 10, 2000 - The MIAA regular season and postseason tournament champions Missouri Southern State College Lions ended the Washburn Ichabods' season with a heartbreaking 79-73 overtime loss in Joplin on March 10. The Ichabods end their season 23-7. The Ichabods and Lions held each other in check the first half, with six ties and seven lead changes. With 2:21 left in the first half, the Lions held a 32-30 lead. After a Washburn technical, the Lions would outscore the Ichabods 11-2 to take a 43-32 into the half.
In the second half, the Ichabods would fight and scratch behind Ryan Murphy's 16 points in the second half including a stretch of eight straight to cut into the Lions' lead, which had grown to 13 points at 55-42 with 14:06 left in the second half. The 'Bods would go on a 28-17 run the rest of the second half to tie the score at 69 at the end of regulation.
In the extra frame, the Lions would score the first four points taking a 73-69 lead. The Ichabods would cut the lead to three on a David Byers' layup, but the Lions would hit three of four free throws down the stretch to land themselves in the South Central Regional Championship game against Midwestern State Univesity, the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Murphy led the Ichabods in scoring tying his career high in both points and rebounds with 20 and 11 respectively. Ewan Auguste scored 14 points and senior David Byers closed out his Washburn career with 11 points and five rebounds. Osiris Ricardo led the Lions with 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the field while Carlos Escalera scored 15 points.
Washburn finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field hitting 27 of 66 shots while going an ice-cold 1 of 9 during the overtime period. The Lions were 24 of 54 from the field for a 44 percent average going 2 of 5 in the extra frame, but hitting 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch. The Ichabods out rebounded the Lions 45 to 31 including 18 offensive rebounds.

About Missouri Southern . . .
The Lions are 25-4 and and they are led by Skyler Bowlin who was the league MVP and Defensive MVP, while coach Robert Corn was Coach of the Year and Marquis Addison was the Freshman of the Year. Jason Adams was named first-team All-MIAA  along with Bowlin and Keane Thoman picked up third-team honors. Bowlin was also named to the MIAA's All-Defensive Team. The Lions won the MIAA regular season championship but fell in the finals of the MIAA Tournament to Fort Hays State 89-83 snapping a five-game winning streak. Jason Adams leads the team in scoring at 18.4 ppg while Skyler Bowlin is scoring 18.4 ppg. and Keane Thomann is scoring 15.9 ppg. Thomann is also averaging 7.3 rebounds per game. The Lions are shooting 51 percent from the field hitting 856 of 1687 shots while going 168 of 446 from 3-point range connecting on 38 percent of their attempts. From the free throw line the Lions are 538 of 740 hitting 73 percent of their shots. The Lions are scoring 83.4 ppg while allowing 71.4 ppg. The Lions are also averaging 9.7 steals per game while forcing 16.4 turnovers per game.
   
Last time out for Missouri Southern . . .
MSSU Sports Information -- March 3, 2011 -- The eighth ranked Missouri Southern Basketball team posed a fierce comeback, but couldn't complete the rally and fell 89-83 to 19th ranked Fort Hays State today in the Championship Game of the 2011 MIAA Tournament at Municipal Auditorium.
The Lions were led in scoring by Skyler Bowlin as the senior scored 22 and went a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line. Keane Thomann had his fourth-straight game of 20 or more points with 20 today and he added seven rebounds. Marquis Addison had 11 points, while Jason Adams' streak of 55-straight games in double-figures came to an end with just nine points on the afternoon.
Hays (25-6) was led in scoring by Dominique Jones as he was named the Tournament MVP. He scored 30 points and added seven assists with no turnovers and added four steals. Dijon Smith scored 14 and pulled down 14 boards, while Corbin Kuntzsch added 18 points of his own.
The Lions jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a three from Addison just two minutes into the game, and led again by four (14-10) after a pair of free-throws from Chris Scruggs. Hays, however, tied the game at 16 and went ahead at 22-20 on a three pointer from Ben Congiusta at the 8:47 mark of the first half. The Tigers would lead from that point on.
Southern took what was an 18-point FHSU advantage at the seven minute mark of the second half and got as close as six twice, late in the second half.
The Lions shot just 37 percent on the night as Hays shot at a 52 percent clip. Southern out rebounded the Tigers 42-37 and had 16 offensive rebounds to the Tigers' nine. 

The Ichabods in the NCAA Tournament. . .
The Ichabods are making their 11th overall NCAA postseason appearance and their first since the 2004-05 season when they fell to Central Oklahoma in the regional quarterfinals in Commerce, Texas dropping an 84-66 decision. The Ichabods are 13-10 in all-time NCAA postseason games. In first round games the Ichabods are 7-3 while going 3-4 in second round games. In the Elite Eight, the Ichabods have gone 3-3 reaching the 2001 national championship game falling to Kentucky Wesleyan 72-63 in Bakersfield, Calif. The Wildcats later vacated that championship because of NCAA violations. Washburn is 2-0 in all-time NCAA postseason games played in Edmond topping Central Oklahoma 92-88 in the first round game then topping Eastern New Mexico to advance to the 1993 Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass. (see page 27 for more information of NCAA play by the Ichabods)

All-MIAA honors. . .
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Senior forward Logan Stutz became the first Ichabod to be named first team all-MIAA since the 2004-05 season after he was selected to the all-conference basketball team voted on by the league coaches. Fellow senior De'Andre Washington was named second team all-MIAA.
Stutz led the Ichabods and the league in scoring with 20.1 ppg while pulling down a team-high 6.8 rpg, which was sixth in the league. Stutz also leads the MIAA in field goal percentage hitting 69 percent of his shots, which is third in the nation as well. He is also 10th in the MIAA in blocks. His 38 points against Grand Canyon earlier this season was the highest point total in the MIAA this season and it was the sixth-best tally in Washburn history. He was the first all-MIAA pick for the Ichabods since the 2004-05 season when Travis Robbins earned first team as well as league MVP honors. Stutz's 502 points this season rank ninth on the Washburn all-time senior scoring chart and his scoring average is fifth on the senior scoring average listing.
Washington tied for sixth in the conference in scoring with a 17.3 ppg average while finishing ninth in rebounds with 6.4 per game. He finished fourth in the league in assists with 5.0 per game and fifth in 3-point field goals made per game with 2.0. Washington's 134 assists this season is fifth on Washburn's senior assist chart.

The Ichabods are 454-203 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 352-65 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
