Ichabods set for home opener against SBU this weekend

Leading Off
Washburn (3-4, 3-1 MIAA) will play the home opener in a four-game series against Southwest Baptist (2-4, 1-3 MIAA) this weekend. The series starts with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Friday and concludes with another doubleheader on Saturday at noon.

The Series
Washburn and Southwest Baptist have met 51 times on the baseball diamond with the Ichabods holding a 33-18 advantage. Last season, the 'Bods took three out of four from SBU in Bolivar.

Washburn
The Ichabods took three out of four from Truman last weekend in the MIAA opener for both teams. Washburn won the opener 6-1 before falling 5-3. The Ichabods swept a doubleheader on Sunday winning 5-4 in extra innings and taking the nightcap 7-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Daren Parker.

Southwest Baptist
The Bearcats dropped three of four games against Nebraska-Omaha to open the MIAA schedule last weekend. SBU took the opener 11-8 before falling in the next three by scores of 19-8, 8-2 and 8-3. The opened the season two weeks ago splitting a pair of games with Upper Iowa.
SBU is led offensively by Landon Yojng and Dominic Bouvier, who are both hitting .400. Paden Grubbs has a team-high two home runs and has driven in six, while batting .300.
Josh Brock is 2-0 on the hill with a 3.72 ERA in 9.2 innings of work.
Mike Nielebeck and Phillip Davolt each have one save for SBU.

Worth Noting
• Washburn's first seven games of the 2011 season will be played in the state of Missouri.
• The Ichabods' first 11 games of the 2011 season are against teams hailing from the Show Me State.

Anson 10th on All-time wins list
Steve Anson has 784 career wins in his 33rd season as a head coach, including 761 wins in his 32nd season at Washburn. That victory total places him 10th on the all-time NCAA-II list. Anson has the most wins among active MIAA coaches.

Preseason Polls
Washburn was picked to finish eighth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Ichabods finished in a tie for sixth place last season and return six starters from last season's squad that finished 21-23 overall and 18-20 in MIAA play. Defending Champion Central Missouri was the unanimous pick to repeat this year.

March 6, 2011 - KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods swept an MIAA doubleheader from Truman State to close out their series at Bulldog Park. The 'Bods took game one 5-4 in eight innings and shutout TSU 7-0 in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
Washburn (3-4, 3-1 MIAA) got on the board with a single run in the top of the first when Dane Simoneau singled home Boone Plager. Truman (2-6, 1-3 MIAA) scored two runs in the second and one in the third off starter Raul Guevara to take a 3-1 lead.
The Ichabods tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth on Andy Petz's second home run in as many games, but the Bulldogs plated one run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead 4-3. WU forced extra innings with one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Plager and scored the winning run in the eighth when Marcus Peavler singled home Wyatt Hall.
Mitch List (1-0) earned the win tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Guevara gave up four runs on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked four.
Chris Allard (0-1) took the loss for Truman allowing two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
Petz and Simoneau each finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.
Washburn jumped out early again in game two scoring one run in the first on a Simoneau RBI and added three more in the third. Petz tripled home two runs and later scored on a Simoneau sacrifice fly.
The Ichabods tacked on one run in the sixth when Matt Raabe doubled home Simoneau and two more in the seventh. Travis Cruz led off with a walk and later scored on wild pitch and Brian Gomez singled home Plager with the final run of the game.
Daren Parker (1-0) tossed a complete game six-hitter to earn the win. He walked two and struck out four on the way to his first win of the season and first career complete game.
Kyle Veazey (0-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs giving up five runs on 10 hits in five innings for work.
Gomez finished the game 4-for-4 and Plager added three hits, while Petz and Simoneau each drove in a pair of runs.

SBU Sports Info - March 7, 2011 - BOLIVAR, Mo. - The SBU Bearcat baseball team opened up MIAA play with an 11-8 victory over Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday, March 3.
Nebraska-Omaha jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but SBU responded well scoring five runs in the bottom half of the third. SBU was able to piece together runs off of hits by Jeremiah Bryan, Landon Young, Niko Saladis, and Paden Grubbs, with Taylor Trotter capping off the inning with a two-run homerun.  UNO put up two more runs in the fifth, but SBU responded again in the bottom half of the inning by scoring six runs of their own.  Grubbs blasted a two-run homerun, and Dominic Bouvier and Saladis both had RBI hits in the inning. UNO would try to surmount a comeback by scoring three in the 6th and one in the 7th, but the Bearcats prevailed, winning 11-8.
The second game of the double-header on Thursday saw lots of offense once more, however the Bearcats lost to the Mavericks 19-8 in seven innings. UNO put up one run in the first and second innings, and added four more in the third before SBU responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth.  SBU pieced together solid at-bats in the inning with Brendon Cox and Bouvier producing RBI hits. The Bearcats would add four more in the sixth, with RBI's by Grubbs, Cox, Bryan, and Young.  Cox doubled in the seventh, his fourth hit and third RBI in the contest, but it wasn't enough as the Bearcats lost 19-8.
The Bearcats and the Mavericks had a tough battle in the third game of the weekend, with the contest remaining close throughout the ballgame.  UNO took an early 2-0 lead on SBU by scoring two in the top half of the first. SBU came back in the bottom half of the second when Tyler Christophel hit an RBI single to drive home Bryan and cut UNO's lead to 2-1.  UNO had a big inning in the sixth, producing five runs, and was able to push the lead to 8-1. SBU showed life in the seventh when Bryan had an RBI single, but UNO came out on top, 8-2.
In the final game of the weekend, SBU once again hung tough with the Mavericks. UNO struck first in the top half of the second inning, but SBU quickly tied the game up in the bottom of the half of the fifth inning off an RBI single by Young. The score remained tied until the sixth, where UNO would score in the next three innings and push the lead to 8-1.  The eighth inning started out well for the Bearcats, producing two runs while only committing one out with help by a triple by Saladis and an RBI by Grubbs, but the Bearcats lost the contest 8-3.
