TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team picked up a doubleheader split with Missouri Western falling in the first game 5-0 before taking the nightcap 4-2 at the Washburn Softball Complex on Friday. Washburn will host No. 16-ranked Emporia State on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
In the opener, Washburn could not started offensively as Missouri Western's Jackie Bishop limited the Lady Blues to four hits in the game while striking out seven batters.
Shelby Erickson had two of the hits in the game for Washburn with
Lauren Himpel and
Alex Zordel picking up the others. The Griffons jumped on the board with two runs in the first and two in the first inning off starter
Kelsie Novotny (5-8) adding two more in the fourth while tagging
Lindsey Moore who came in from left to pitch the final three innings with a run in the seventh.
In the second game, Washburn (10-16, 1-3 MIAA) again fell behind after the first inning when the Griffons' Ashley Hudson led off the game with a home run staking Missouri Western (21-8, 1-1 MIAA) to an early 1-0 lead. Washburn scored its first two runs of the day in the bottom of the second when
Jacque Horejsi gournded out sending Erickson home on the play. Washburn added a second run when
Marissa Martin drove in
Lauren Himpel with a single down the left field line. The Griffons tied the game in the third inning when Brittany Douglas singled scoring Hudson knotting the score at 2-2. The Lady Blues took back the lead in the bottom of the frame when Horejsi picked up her second RBI again scoring
Lauren Himpel with the go-ahead run. Washburn added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when
Hilary Weatherford doubled to center scoring
Britny Cushing who singled earlier in the inning. Novotny, who improved to 6-7 with the win scattered seven hits in the win in game two. Lauren Himpled scored two runs while picking up an outfield assist in the third inning at the plate which would have put the Griffons up 3-2 at the time of the play.
