Last Time out for Fort Hays State
FHSU Sports Info. - April 9, 2011 - The Fort Hays State baseball team swept Truman on Saturday (Apr. 9) in the final two games of the four-game series. The Tigers won by scores of 8-3 and 5-3 to improve to 15-15 overall and 12-12 in the MIAA.
Game 1: FHSU 8, Truman 3
The Tigers received a strong pitching effort from Connor Beer in the first game. He allowed just four hits and one run over the first five innings, allowing FHSU to build a 6-1 lead. He allowed single runs in the sixth and seventh, but two runs by FHSU in the top of the seventh allowed him to finish the game.
Beer scattered eight hits and did not allow a walk. He had three strikeouts and moved to 4-3 on the season with the win.
Sloan Soulia put the Tigers up 1-0 in the first inning with a RBI single. A two-RBI triple by Brandon Hoefler and two-run home run by Nash Smith in the fourth gave FHSU a 5-1 cushion after Truman tied the game in the second at 1-1. Chris Santoscoy reached home on an error off the bat of Hoefler in the sixth, and Kelton Rule had a RBI single in the seventh. The Tigers scored their final run on another fielding error by the Bulldogs.
Game 2: FHSU 5, Truman 3
The Tigers have struggled to find consistency on the mound in the fourth game of conference series' this year, but closer Brett Macari stopped that trend on Saturday by throwing a nine-inning complete game to give the Tigers a 3-1 series win.
After allowing two runs to the Bulldogs in the second, Macari buckled down to retire 10 of the next 11 batters he faced before running into his final snag in the sixth by allowing one run.
The Tiger offense picked up Macari in the third with three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Sheldon Howell delivered an RBI single and JC Ochoa followed with a two-RBI double. After the run by the Bulldogs in the sixth, the game stayed tied at 3-3 through the seventh.
Kyle Veazey was also tossing a fine game on the mound for Truman until the Tigers finally chased him from the game in the eighth. An error by the Truman third baseman allowed a Tiger runner to score and it ended Veazey's day on the mound with FHSU up 4-3.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the ninth when another error extended the inning and allowed Brandon Hoefler to drive home a run with a single.
