Last Time out for Washburn
April 12, 2011 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- Derek Fogel tossed a complete game two-hitter to lead the Washburn Ichabods to a 1-0 win in the opening game of an MIAA doubleheader with Fort Hays State on Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. The Tigers rebounded to win game two 5-4. Washburn is back in action this Saturday and Sunday when Central Missouri comes to town.
Fogel (3-3) tossed a gem in the first game retiring the last 16 batters he faced and 20 of the final 21 hitters. He walked one and struck out six.
Washburn (12-17, 12-13 MIAA) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Boone Plager led off with a walk and went to second on Blake Boling's sacrifice bunt. He went to third on a flyout to right by Travis Cruz and scored on an infield single by Marcus Peavler.
Chase Schippers (0-2) was the tough luck loser for the Tigers (16-16, 13-13 MIAA) allowed the one run on four hits in six innings. He walked one and fanned four.
Fort Hays State jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first in game two. Sloan Soulia had a sacrifice fly that scored Brandon Hoefler. JC Ochoa singled home Nash Smith in the third to make it 2-0 in favor of FHSU. A sacrifice fly by Brett Macari in the fourth made it 3-0 Tigers.
Washburn got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Blake Boling had an RBI groundout to plate the first run and Travis Cruz singled home Plager, but the Ichabods stranded two runners in scoring position.
JC Ochoa had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put the Tigers back in front by a pair at 4-2. Chris Santoscoy scored on a double play ball in the seventh and Fort Hays State led 5-2.
Washburn pulled to within a run in the bottom of the seventh when David Wade belted his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 5-4 FHSU, but again the 'Bods stranded a pair of runners.
Tyler Bean doubled with one out in the eigth to put the potential tying run in scoring position, but a strikeout and lineout ended the threat and the game.
Joey Hinckley (0-1) took the loss for Washburn allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. Mitchell List allowed one run on two hits in one inning and Kerry Schachenmeyer tossed three scoreless innings in relief.
David Geiger (5-2) earned the win for the Tigers throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Last Time out for Central Missouri
UCM Sports Info. - April 10, 2011 - The No. 2 Central Missouri baseball Mules came back with 3-of-4 from an important series with the Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha on Friday and Saturday. The Mules took the first three games by scores of 6-1, 9-8 and 10-6, before falling in the finale 10-0.
The Mules (27-5, 22-4 MIAA) got a complete game from senior right-hander Don Lisi in the opener, as he gave up only one run in seven innings. He struck out three batters, and gave up only seven hits in the game, with no walks.
Offensively, the Mules jumped on 2010 MIAA Pitcher of the Year Joe Holtmeyer from the start, tallying three runs in the first inning thanks to four hits, including two bunt singles. UCM tallied two more in the fourth thanks to an error by the Mavs (20-9, 16-8 MIAA), and the final run in the seventh on an RBI single from senior Tyler Ruch. The Mavericks only run came in the fifth inning. Ruch led the UCM offense with two hits on the day.
In the nine-inning contest, Central Missouri jumped out early again with five runs in the third inning, but the Mavericks kept it within striking distance, tagging two in the bottom half. UCM scored three runs in the next two innings, but the Mavs tallied five, making it 8-7. Neither team's pitching could throw up zeros until the seventh after the Mavericks tied it at eight the inning before.
The difference came when sophomore right-hander Aaron Baker entered the game in the eighth. He threw up two scoreless innings, and thanks to a leadoff double by Nick DeBiasse in the top of the ninth, followed by a UNO error a couple batters later that allowed him to score, Baker grabbed the win. The teams combined for 26 hits in the game, with UCM generating 10.
The opener on day two saw the Mules offense put on a clinic, starting the game's first at-bat. Junior Bret Schwartz tripled, then DeBiasse knocked an RBI double to right center to score him. An RBI ground-out by Will Mulligan scored Ruch to make it 2-0 Mules.
The Mules made it 5-0 in the third, thanks to back-to-back homers from DeBiasse and Mulligan, but the Mavericks didn't give up, scoring two runs in each of the next three innings to come within a run at 7-6. Junior lefthander Travis Unthank came in to thwart the comeback though, tossing the final 2.2 innings to get the save. For good measure, the Mules put up three more runs in the top of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Albert Selanders and Ruch, followed by another RBI from DeBiasse with a single.
DeBiasse went 3-of-4 with four RBI to lead the attack, while Matt Curtis got the win on the mound. The Mules pounded out 13 hits in the game while UNO had 11.
The series finale was all Mavericks though, as starter Matt Tew threw a gem, giving up only two hits and no runs through six innings. Meanwhile, the UNO offense got rolling in the fourth, tallying four runs off starter Kurtis Schuyler. They scored two more in the fifth, and from there the Mules couldn't keep them off the board, eventually falling to the 10-run rule in the seventh. The Mavericks out-hit UCM 13-4 in the game.
