TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods earned a split with the No. 2-ranked Central Missouri Mules winning the opener 3-2 behind a pitching gem from
Brett Ash before falling 6-2 in the nightcap. The series concludes on Sunday with another doubleheader at 1 p.m.
Ash (4-4) tossed a complete-game giving up two runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out four.
The 'Bods (13-18, 13-14 MIAA) plated single runs in the first and second innings to grab a 2-0 lead.
Marcus Peavler singled in the first and scored on a double to left center by
Andy Petz to get WU on the board.
David Wade belted his fifth home run of the season in the second to give the Ichabods a 2-0 lead.
Central Missouri (28-6, 23-5 MIAA) plated a single run in the sixth to cut the lead in half. Tyler Ruch singled to center and stole second. He later scored on a ground out by Will Mulligan.
Blake Boling led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a Petz single up the middle.
The Mules plated one run in the seventh on a Ruch RBI single, but left two runners on base.
Don Lisi (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven.
UCM jumped on top 2-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the first. Albert Selanders scored on an error and Ruch scored on an RBI groundout by Frank Specht. The Mules made it 3-0 in the third when Kevin Gratza singled home Nick DeBiasse.
The 'Bods had the bases loaded with no outs in the second, but could not score and also left three runners on base in the third. WU stranded 10 runners on base for the game.
Selanders scored an unearned run in the fourth to make it 4-0 and Ruch doubled home Selanders in the sixth to make it 5-0.
Tyler Bean had a two-run double in the sixth that pulled WU to within 5-2, but Colin Murphy had a suicide squeeze in the seventh to score Ruch and give UCM the 6-2 win.
Matt Curtis (7-0) picked up the win for Central Missouri allowing two runs on three hits in 6.1 innings. He walked six and fanned seven. Eric Silkwood tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Daren Parker (2-4) took the loss for Washburn after giving up four runs, only one earned, on four hits in 3.0 innings.
