TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn baseball team was swept in an MIAA doubleheader by Central Missouri on Sunday afternoon at Falley Field. The second-ranked Mules took the opener 8-3 before rallying for a 7-5 win in the nightcap. Washburn is back in action on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Rockhurst.
Central Missouri (30-6, 25-5 MIAA) jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning of game one. Nick DeBiasse doubled home both runs after a Washburn error allowed Tyler Anthony to reach base on what could have been a double play ball.
UCM extended the lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the third. Frank Specht had a sacrifice fly and Luke Schlechte singled home the other run.
The Ichabods (13-20, 13-16 MIAA) plated a single run in the bottom of the third when
Andy Petz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. UCM made it 6-1 with two more runs in the fourth. Anthony doubled home the first run and later scored on a DeBiasse double.
Washburn got a two-run triple from
Tyler Bean in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Mules plated two more runs in the top of the sixth on a triple by Specht.
Kurtis Schuyler (2-1) got the win for UCM allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings, while
Derek Fogel (3-4) took the loss for Washburn. Fogel gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out one and walked four.
Washburn jumped in front 3-0 in the first inning of game two.
David Wade singled with the bases loaded to score
Marcus Peavler and Petz and Bean came home when the rightfielder misplayed the ball.
The Mules got a single run in the fourth on an Albert Selanders sacrifice fly only to see the 'Bods plate two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Petz doubled down the leftfield line scoring
Blake Boling and Peavler.
Central Missouri pulled to within 5-4 with a three-run sixth inning. Selanders doubled home the first run and Schlecte had a two-run single. The Mules tied the game one inning later when DeBiasse singled home Bret Schwartz.
UCM plated two runs in the top of the ninth the first one on a wild pitch and the second on an RBI double from Selanders to get the win.
Aaron Baker (2-1) got the win tossing 4.2 innings of one-hit relief.
Mitchell List (2-2) allowed one run on two hits in 0.2 innings of relief and took the loss for Washburn.
