JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 12-7 win over Missouri Southern in the first game of an MIAA doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium. The Lions held off a late Ichabod rally to win game two 12-11 to earn the split. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
Washburn (7-13, 7-10 MIAA) got on the board right out of the gates with four runs in the top of the first. All four runs came with two outs.
Cameron Kasel singled home
Andy Petz to start things off.
Marcus Peavler had an RBI another run scored on an error by the third baseman and
Blake Boling drew a bases loaded walk.
The Lions (13-13, 9-11 MIAA) cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. A bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice plated both runs for MSSU. Missouri Southern drew to within a run at 4-3 on an RBI single from Dane Kolkmeyer in the second inning.
The 'Bods plated four runs in the third to open an 8-3 lead.
Travis Cruz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run then Petz cleared the bases with a three-run triple.
A two-run single from Dallas Burke and an RBI single off the bat of CJ Matthews got the Lions to within 8-6 in the bottom of the third.
Peavler had an RBI single in the fourth to extend the WU lead to 9-6 and drove in another run in the fifth as the Ichabods extended the lead to 11-6. Missouri Southern plated one run in the fifth on a Ben Millard RBI single, but Washburn responded with another run in the sixth when Petz drove in his fourth run of the game and WU led 12-7.
Derek Fogel (1-3) picked up his first career win allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out none.
Kerry Schachenmeyer tossed three scoreless innings of relief allowing just two hits to earn his first save of the season.
Cody Griebling (4-2) took the loss for MSSU after giving up eight runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work.
The Lions jumped out to a big lead in game two plating eight runs in the first inning and did so on just four hits.
Washburn got on the board in the fourth when
Dane Simoneau belted a solo home run leading off. It was Simoneau's first long ball of the season and the 10th of his career.
Missouri Southern extended the lead to 10-1 in the fourth on a two-run double by Burke. The Ichabods plated three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within 10-4. Peavler doubled home Cruz and later scored on an RBI single by Simoneau.
Matt Raabe also had an RBI single scoring Simoneau.
The Lions made it 11-4 with a single run in the bottom of the inning and added another run in the sixth to make it 12-4. The 'Bods pulled to within 12-6 with a pair of runs in the seventh. Simoneau drove in Peavler and Petz also scored on the play on an error by the shortstop.
Cruz singled home
Wyatt Hall in the eighth to make it 12-7 and an RBI single from Petz made it 12-8. Washburn had the bases loaded with only one out in the inning, but stranded all three base runners.
Tyler Bean doubled to lead off the ninth and later scored on a
Blake Boling fielder's choice to pull WU within 12-9. Peavler doubled with two outs scoring Boling to make it 12-10. After Petz was hit by a pitch Simoneau singled home Peavler to make it 12-11, but the comeback fell short as Washburn stranded the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Raul Guevara (1-3) took the loss for Washburn after allowing eight runs, only three earned, on four hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Joey Hinckley tossed 4.1 innings of relief giving up three runs on seven hits and
Seth Huninghake allowed one run on two hits in three innings in his first action of the season.
Brett Abell (4-4) earned the win for Missouri Southern after giving up four runs on nine hits in six innings. Austin Brown came in to record the final out and earned his third save of the season.
The Ichabods out-hit the Lions 20-13 in the contest.
