TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team was limited to seven hits in a doubleheader sweep falling to No. 16 Emporia State 9-0 and 3-0 Saturday at the Washburn Softball Complex. Washburn (10-18, 1-5 MIAA) will be back in action hosting Fort Hays State on Tuesday in Topeka.
In the first game the Hornets broke open a 1-0 game after three innings scoring three in the fourth inning and then adding a five-spot in the fifth before taking the 9-0 win.
Marisa Tetuan had a first inning single for the Lady Blues while
Alex Zordel connected on a fourth inning double and
Lauren Himpel had a single and swiped a base in the third inning. Washburn stranded six base runners.
Lindsey Moore (0-1) took the loss in the circle for Washburn while ESU's Karley Scmelzer improved to 8-2 overall with eight strikeouts. Abby Hughes was 3 for 4 for the Hornets scoring three times driving in three runs.
In the second game, both teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when ESU scored first when Kaitlin Martin led off the inning with a home run off Lady Blues' starter
Kelsie Novotny (6-8), who struck out three in the game allowing only one earned run. ESU added two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning leading to the 3-0 win and its 25th straight win over Washburn.
