Ichabods sweep Bearcats to open four-game set in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods started a crucial doubleheader with Northwest Missouri on a great note sweeping the first two games of a four-game series winning the first game 6-3 while taking the second game 6-0. The two teams will wrap the series with another doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.

In the opener, Washburn (16-20, 15-16 MIAA) broke open a scoreless tie with four runs in the third inning with four hits. Dane Simoneau doubled down the right field line scoring Marcus Peavler and Blake Boling. Boling and Peavler both reached on singles. Washburn picked up two more runs in the frame as David Wade singled to left scoring Simoneau and Andy Petz who reached base on an error.

The Bearcats (16-24, 15-19 MIAA) scored three runs in the fifth inning taking advantage of an Ichabod error, but Washburn came back with a run in the fifth on a sac fly by Travis Cruz scoring Petz. The Ichabods added another run in the sixth on a solo home run by Cameron Kasel.

Brett Ash (5-4) won his fourth straight start in the complete-game win allowing one earned run scattering five hits striking out three. Simoneau was 2 for 2 in the game with 2 RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, Derek Fogel (4-4) tossed a complete-game shutout allowing six hits and striking out nine in a 6-0 win over the Bearcats. He needed only 107 pitches in the win lowering his ERA to 2.81.

Washburn again used the third inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Andy Petz doubled chasing home Blake Boling and Marcus Peavler. Dane Simoneau picked up an RBI single to left scoring Petz. David Wade singled to right driving in Simoneau to wrap the scoring in the frame.

The Ichabods added two more in the seventh inning on a Peavler RBI single to center scoring Boone Player who led off the inning with a single and Simoneau picked up his fourth RBI of the day with an RBI single to right field scoring Peavler.
