TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods swept the fourth-ranked Emporia State Hornets 10-7 and 4-2 on Friday evening at Falley Field. It was the first doubleheader sweep of the Hornets since a sweep at Falley in 2007. The win in game one gave Washburn head coach Steve Anson his 800th career win.

Emporia State (35-8, 31-7 MIAA) opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Parker Amos had an RBI single and later scored on a throwing error, while another run came across from a passed ball.

Washburn (20-21, 18-17 MIAA) got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Marcus Peavler scored from first on an Andy Petz RBI double. The Ichabods erupted for five runs in the second inning to take a 6-3 lead. Peavler had an RBI groundout to start the scoring then Petz drove in a pair with his second double of the game. Dane Simoneau singled home Petz to make it 5-3 and later scored on an error.

The Hornets got one run back in the fourth on an Andy Cotton RBI groundout, but the 'Bods answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. Cameron Kasel drew a bases loaded walk to push across Simoneau.

ESU plated a single run in the fifth on a Joe Vaskas lead-off home run only to see Washburn score two more in the bottom half and push the lead to 9-5. Simoneau had a sacrifice fly scoring Peavler and David Wade had an RBI triple.

The Hornets pulled to within 9-7 with two runs in the sixth, but the Ichabods answered with another run in the bottom of the frame on a Peavler RBI single for the 10-7 final.

Brett Ash (6-4) won his fifth straight start after allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits in 5.2 innings. Kerry Schachenmeyer tossed 1.1 innings of shutout relief to pick up his third save of the season.

Brandon Faulkner (7-2) took the loss for the Hornets after giving up six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.

The win gave Washburn Head Coach Steve Anson career coaching win No. 800. In his 33rd season as a head coach Anson's record stands at 801-732-3.

Emporia State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two when Parker Amos singled home Joe Vaskas, but the Ichabods took the lead for good with three runs in the third thanks in part to three Hornet errors. Boone Plager reached on an error and later scored on one. Dane Simoneau drew a bases loaded walk to force home a run and Tyler Bean had an RBI fielder's choice.

Washburn added a single run in the sixth to go up 4-1. Bean led off with a single and stole second. He went to third on a Travis Cruz single and scored on a Cameron Kasel single to center.

The Hornets plated one run in the eighth and had runners at second and third with no out, but Seth Huninghake struck out the next three batters to keep the lead at 4-2. He then pitched a perfect ninth to secure the win and the first doubleheader sweep of ESU in four years.

Derek Fogel (5-4) picked up the win after allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings. Huninghake allowed one hit in two innings of relief to earn his first save of the season.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. in Emporia
