JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium. The Ichabods took the opener 8-7 in extra innings before the Lions salvaged the split with a 11-6 win in the nightcap. Washburn is back in action on Tuesday evening at Newman at 5 p.m.
The Lions (14-14, 10-12 MIAA) jumped in front 1-0 in the second inning of game one. Dallas Burke tripled and later scored on a Cullen Baxter sacrifice fly. Washburn (8-14, 8-11 MIAA) grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
Travis Cruz had an RBI single driving home
Boone Plager and
Andy Petz drove Cruz home with an RBI single of his own.
Missouri Southern quickly regained the lead 4-2 with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Dane Kolkmeyer had a run scoring single and Jesse Kinzey had a two-run single to push the Lions back in front.
The Ichabods plated a single run in the fourth when
David Wade led off with a home run, his second of the season. MSSU got a solo home run from Patrick Deao in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-3.
Cruz, Petz and
Dane Simoneau each drove in a run in the top of the fifth to put Washburn in front 6-5, but the Lions tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by Baxter.
The game remained tied through the seventh and into extra innings before the 'Bods scored two times in the top of the eighth on a
Matt Raabe two-run single. The Lions notched one run in the bottom of the inning, but stranded the tying run at third base.
Cruz and Petz each had three hits and two RBI in the game for WU.
Brett Ash (2-4) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits in four innings of relief.
Daren Parker allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings as the Washburn starter.
Austin Brown (2-3) took the loss for Missouri Southern after giving up two runs on six hits in three innings of relief work.
Just like in game one the Lions took an early lead in the first inning of game two. Kolkmeyer singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a Zach Campbell RBI single. The Ichabods tied the game in the top of the third when Petz singled home Cruz, but the Lions came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on RBI from Kolkmeyer, Campbell and Baxter.
Washburn pulled to within 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Blake Boling scored on a wild pitch and
Cameron Kasel singled home Cruz.
MSSU tallied one run in the bottom of the inning on a Ben Millard RBI single to go up 5-3. The Ichabods tied the game in the top of the sixth. Cruz had a sacrifice fly and Simoneau singled home Plager to knot the game at 5-all.
The Lions, however, regained the lead for good with a six run bottom of the sixth. Harrison Gerber drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right and CJ Matthews was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put MSSU up 7-5. Kolkmeyer then belted a grand slam to left giving the Lions an 11-5 cushion.
The Ichabods scored one run in the seventh when
Tyler Bean led off with a home run, but that was all they would get.
Mitchell List (2-1) took the loss for Washburn giving up four runs on three hits in one inning of relief.
Alex Coons gave up five runs, only two earned, on six hits in 4.1 innings to start the game.
Michael Mudd (2-2) earned the win in relief for Missouri Southern. He allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work.
