EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were swept in the second day of action in a four-game set at No. 4 Emporia State falling 10-7 and 7-5 splitting the season series with two wins each. Washburn will be back in action at Fort Hays State on May 3 before wrapping up the regular season hosting Pittsburg State in a four game series beginning May 7.

In the first game, Emporia State scored a solo run in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Washburn (20-23, 17-19 MIAA) took advantage of an Emporia State (37-8, 33-7 MIAA) error to score its first run of the game when Dane Simoneau drove in Blake Bolling with a single through the left side. The Hornets added two more in the fourth and four more in the fifth along with a solo run in the sixth inning taking a 10-3 lead into the top of the seventh. The Ichabods added four in the top of the seventh when Tyler Bean reached on a double and back-to-back singles by David Wade and Travis Cruz loaded the bases for Blake Boling who singled driving in both Bean and Cruz. A walk to Marcus Peavler loaded the bases again and Andy Petz drew a walk sending Cruz home, but Washburn would not score any more ending the inning taking the 10-7 loss. Alex Coons (2-2) took the loss allowing six earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings pitched. Bean finished with 3 for 4 with a run scored and Boling and Cruz each drove in two.

In the finale, the Hornets scored three in both the second and third innings before Washburn came back with two in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. Wade connected on a two-runner homer in the fourth inning - his seventh of the season - which scored Bean. In the fifth, both runs were driven in by Simoneau who had a single to left scoring Boling and Peavler. The Hornets added a solo run in the sixth and neither team would score the final three innings. Daren Parker (2-5) took the loss striking out three. Eric Schmid came in and tossed 2 and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Boling and Wade each had two hits in the contest.
