Ichabods fall to Newman in 17-14 slugfest

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell to Newman in a 17-14 slugfest at McCarthy Field on Tuesday evening. The teams combined for 18 extra-base hits, including four home runs. The Ichabods are back in action this weekend for a four-game MIAA series at Lincoln beginning with a single nine-inning game on Friday at 3 p.m.

Washburn (8-15) raced to an early lead with five runs in the top of the first. Marcus Peavler had an RBI single to put WU up 1-0. After a single by Andy Petz loaded the bases, Tyler Bean smashed a bases-clearing double to center and the 'Bods led 4-0. Blake Hageman added an RBI fielder's choice to round out the scoring.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Jets plated five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 5-5. David Longmore had an RBI single and later scored when Ryan Engrav belted a three-run homer. Thomas Robulack reach on an error that scored Scot Palmer to tie the game.

Newman (14-19) took its first lead of the game with a single run in the bottom of the second to go up 6-5. Palmer singled home Mike Williams to give the Jets the lead.

Washburn regained the lead 8-6 with three runs in the top of the third. Blake Boling had an RBI single to tie the game and Boone Plager had a two-run double to put the Ichabods in front. That lead evaporated quickly in the bottom of the inning. Longmore had a fielder's choice RBI to pull Newman within one and Williams gave NU the lead back with a two-run double. Engrav drove in his fourth run of the game with an RBI double and Palmer belted a two-run home run to put the Jets in front  12-8. Back-to-back doubles by Robulack and Brett Delcambre plated another run and the Jets led 13-8.

The 'Bods got one run back in the top of the fourth. Petz led off with a double and later scored on a Bean RBI single to pull within four at 13-9. The lead shrunk to three at 13-10 when Plager scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Washburn had a chance for more, but stranded two runners.

Newman extended the lead back to six at 16-10 in the bottom of the fifth. Robulack smashed a three-run homer to left. A single run in the sixth made it 17-10, Longmore doubled home his third run of the game.

The Ichabods rallied for three runs in the eighth. David Wade belted smacked his third home run of the season, a two-run shot and Travis Cruz added an RBI double.

WU tallied another run in the ninth when Petz scored on a throwing error, but it was too little too late.

Shawn Moore (0-1) took the loss for Washburn giving up five runs on six hits in one inning of relief. Starter Raul Guevara last just 2.1 innings after giving up eight runs on nine hits.

Eric Hansen (2-0) earned the win for Newman allowing four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Starter Logan Clewes allowed five runs on four hits in just 1.2 innings.

Bean finished 4-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI to lead the Ichabods. Boling, Cruz, Plager and Peavler each had two hits apiece.
