TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept in doubleheader action by Fort Hays State falling 8-3 and 4-2 at the Washburn Softball Complex. Washburn will be back in action this weekend in MIAA doubleheaders at Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern beginning Friday.

In the opener, the Tigers (17-16, 3-7 MIAA) scored seven runs in the first two inning with three coming in the top of the first. Washburn tallied two in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homer by Alex Zordel. Washburn added another run in the bottom of the third when Jacque Horejsi finished a 12-pitch at bat drawing a bases loaded walk scoring Lauren Himpel. The Tigers added one more in the seventh leading to the 8-3 win. Washburn starter Kelsie Novotny gave up four earned runs in one inning pitched giving way to Danielle Fox, who pitched the next four innings. Fort Hays State rapped out 11 hits in the first game compared to four for Washburn.

In the second game, Washburn jumped out to a 1-0 lead after its first at bat when Marisa Tetuan singled to center scoring Katie Schroeder who doubled to lead off the game. The Tigers knotted the score with a solo run in the second inning and added two more in the third inning on a 2-run homer by Malinee Powell, who had three home runs in the twinbill. The Tigers added a solo run in the fifth inning before Washburn added a run in the sixth inning when Britny Cushing singled chasing home Alex Zordel who singled in the inning. Washburn's rally in the seventh came up short when the Lady Blues stranded two on the bases when the game ended. Fox (4-10) took the loss pitching the complete game tossing 132 pitches striking out two. The Lady Blues stranded nine in the game giving up 14 hits to the Tigers.
