Leading Off
Making their first MIAA tournament appearance since 2006, and seventh trip overall, the sixth-seeded Washburn Ichabods (22-27, 20-23 MIAA) will square off with the third-seeded Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (32-18, 28-16) in the first round of the MIAA tournament at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
The Series
Washburn and Nebraska Omaha have met 75 times on the diamond with the Mavericks holding a 41-34 advantage in the series. UNO swept the four-game series back in March in Omaha. The Mavericks out-scored the Ichabods 30-10 in the four games. Washburn is 11-20 against the Mavericks under Steve Anson.
Washburn
The Ichabods dropped three out of four to Pittsburg State to close out the regular season over the weekend. Washburn won the opener 3-2 in 11 innings behind a complete-game from
Brett Ash. WU then lost the next three games by a combined score of 22-7.
The Ichabods are batting .271 as a team and are led in batting average by
Tyler Bean at .338 and
Dane Simoneau at .316. Bean also leads the team with 16 doubles and is second with seven home runs, while Simoneau set a new Washburn record with 53 career doubles (11 this season).
Andy Petz leads the team with three triples and 42 RBIs. Four players are batting .300 or better with Petz and
Marcus Peavler both batting .315.
Brett Ash leads the pitching staff with seven wins after picking up his sixth straight win in an 11-inning complete game against Pittsburg State. He also sports a 3.93 ERA, which is second only to
Derek Fogel's 3.68 ERA. The staff ERA stands at 5.24. Fogel also leads the team with 53 strikeouts in 71 innings and opposing batters are hitting just .229 against him, while opponents bat .294 against WU as a whole.
Nebraska Omaha
The Mavericks enter the MIAA postseason tournament at 32-18 overall and 28-16 in the MIAA and the No. 3 seed. UNO split its final series of the season with Missouri Western over the weekend and 5-5 in the final 10 games of the season.
The Mavericks are led offensively by Connor McCrite's .402 average. He is joined by Brady Hohl at .400. In all, 10 Maverick players are hitting .300 or better and the team is hitting .336 as a whole.
Jed Hanson leads UNO with eight home runs and 43 RBIs as the Mavs have hit 48 home runs as a team and 150 total extra-base hits. The Mavericks have also stolen 49-of-65 attempts.
The staff ERA stands at 4.92 with Zach Croonquist sporting a team-low 1.29 ERA in 12 appearances (11 relief). Joe Holtmeyer leads the staff with a 7-2 record and has a 5.01 ERA. He has struck out 87 batters in 64.2 innings. As a staff, UNO pitchers have fanned 338 hitters in 386.1 innings pitched.

With Washburn's game one win over Emporia State two weeks ago Ichabod head coach Steve Anson registered career win No. 800. He now has 803 career wins in his 33rd season as a head coach, including 780 wins in his 32 seasons at Washburn. That victory total places him 10th on the all-time NCAA-II wins list among active coaches. Anson has the most wins among active MIAA coaches.

The Ichabods are making their seventh appearance in the MIAA postseason tournament and their first since 2006. The Ichabods are 10-14 all-time in the MIAA tournament, including 1-2 in their last appearance.

May 8, 2011 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were swept in the final regular season doubleheader 8-3 and 5-1 by Pittsburg State on Sunday afternoon, Senior Day, at Falley Field. Washburn still qualified for the MIAA tournament by virtue of Fort Hays State's win over Missouri Southern.
The Gorillas (20-30, 16-29 MIAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one on a Ryan Bilovesky RBI fielder's choice. Four hits and an error led to five PSU runs in the fourth to give the Gorillas a 6-0 lead. Pitt State added two more runs in the fifth and led 8-0.
Washburn (22-27, 20-23 MIAA) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late.
Andy Petz had an RBI fielder's choice as did
Dane Simoneau and
David Wade added an RBI double for WU.
Alex Coons (2-3) took the loss for Washburn after giving up six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.
Ryan Hintze (4-6) got the win for PSU allowing three runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings.
A second inning RBI groundout gave the Gorillas a 1-0 lead in game two. They tacked on two more unearned runs in the fourth to lead 3-0. The Ichabods tallied one run in the bottom of the fifth. Simoneau led off with a double and went to third on a
Tyler Bean single then scored on a Wade sacrifice fly to right field.
The Gorillas added single runs in the seventh and ninth for the 5-1 win.
Daren Parker (2-6) took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits in a complete game effort.
Ryan Sorell (5-4) earned the win for PSU tossing a complete game giving up five hits and one run.
Washburn will enter the MIAA tournament as the No. 6 seed and will play third-seeded Nebraska Omaha on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

UNO Sports Info. - May 8, 2011 - OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team split its doubleheader against Missouri Western on Sunday, dropping a 6-3 loss before storming back to a 13-2 win in seven innings at the Ballpark at Boys Town. Now finished with the regular-season portion of their schedule, the Mavericks are 32-18 (28-16 MIAA), while MWSU is 25-23 (24-19 MIAA).
Nebraska Omaha's two victories this weekend helped the squad to its seventh straight season with 30 or more wins.
Junior Mark Waldron led the Mavericks' offensive attack, finishing a combined 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and six runs driven in. Junior Brady Hohl notched five runs and four RBI and hit his fifth home run of the season.
Nik Jurado (7-2) earned the complete-game win in the first contest, allowing three runs on seven hits. Jurado totaled six strikeouts with six walks over seven innings. UNO's Derek Landis (3-4) took the loss, giving up five runs – four earned – on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Junior Mark Waldron finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while senior Tyler Davies was 2-for-3 with one run driven in. MWSU's Spencer Shockley registered a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and a trio of RBI.
Missouri Western jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with Nate Jones singling down the right field line and later capitalizing on a Maverick error to score.
UNO grabbed the lead in the bottom of the frame, notching two runs on two hits. Hohl led off with a single through the left side and stole second, followed by a walk from freshman Caleb Palensky. Senior Jed Hanson's groundout put both runners into scoring position, and Waldron's two-run single up the middle made it 2-1.
The Griffons came back in the third, as Shockley sent a two-run home run over the left field wall to regain a 3-2 advantage. Nebraska Omaha knotted the game at 3-3 in the fourth when Davies had an RBI single to right that scored Waldron.
Missouri Western put its final three runs on the board in the top of the fifth. Jones drew a walk and later came in on Shockley's single through the left side, and Shockley and Jason Solma were both plated on Kyle Peterson's two-run single up the middle. It was all the scoring the Griffons would need, as they hung on for the 6-3 victory.
The Mavericks stormed out to a four-run lead in the first inning of game two and never relinquished the advantage to the Griffons. Hohl drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then came in on a double by senior Jed Hanson. Waldron added another double to left center and advanced to third, clearing the bases and scoring Hanson and Palensky. Waldron then tallied the Mavs' last run of the inning on junior Colby McCord's sacrifice fly and pushed the score to 4-0.
Missouri Western came back in the second, as Peterson homered over the scoreboard in left field to make it 4-1.
Nebraska Omaha chipped in another run in the second, with Hohl scoring on Palensky's sacrifice fly that moved the score to 5-1. Western added a run of its own in the third, bringing it to 5-2.
UNO exploded for five runs on six hits in the fourth, highlighted by Hohl's two-run single through the right side that scored McCord and freshman Beau Suponchick.
In the sixth, pinch-hitter Martin Sartin got on with a single to right, and Hohl followed up with a two-run homer to left, extending the lead to 13-2. UNO held the Griffons scoreless in the seventh, earning the win by way of the MIAA's 10-run rule.
Sophomore Matt Tew (5-1) captured the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts over seven innings. MWSU's Oliver Kadey (4-5) took the loss, giving up three runs on two hits with a walk. Kadey left the game in the first inning after a collision in the field.
Hohl and Waldron each finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, with Hohl scoring four times and Waldron twice. Hanson, Palensky and McCrite also had multi-hit games, as each player registered a pair of hits, and Palensky and Hanson both scored twice.
UNO, which has clinched a No. 3 seed for the conference tournament, returns to action on Thursday, March 12, traveling to the MIAA Championship. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. A complete bracket and tournament schedule will be released by the MIAA early this week.
Last Meeting between Washburn and UNO
March 19, 2011 - OMAHA, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods were swept by Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday afternoon 6-1 and 14-4. The sweep drops Washburn to 6-9 overall and 6-6 in MIAA play. The Ichabods return home next weekend to host Missouri Western on Saturday and Sunday.
The Mavericks (11-4, 9-3 MIAA) took game one 6-1 plating three runs in the first and single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Washburn avoided the shutout with a single run in the top of the seventh on a
David Wade RBI double.
Raul Guevara (1-2) gave up six runs on 12 hits in four innings and was tagged with the loss. Derek Landis (2-0) earned the win for UNO allowing just two hits in five innings.
The Mavericks completed the doubleheader and weekend sweep with a 14-4 win in the nightcap. Washburn jumped in front 3-0 in the second inning.
Tyler Bean belted a two-run home run to left and
Blake Hageman added an RBI single for Washburn.
UNO tallied one run in the third and took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth. WU pulled to within 6-4 on a Wade solo home run in the top of the sixth, but the Mavericks responded with four runs in the bottom half to go up 10-4. Nebraska-Omaha added one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take the 10-run win.
Daren Parker (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up six runs, only one earned, on seven hits in five innings as the Ichabods committed five errors. Andrew Reck (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings to earn the win and Cory Buckley earned his second save of the season tossing three innings and giving up one run on two hits.
The four-game sweep was Washburn's first time being swept since 2008.
