Ichabods split DH at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader with Fort Hays State on Tuesday afternoon at Larks Park. Washburn scored four runs in the seventh to win the opener 8-7 before falling 11-7 in the nightcap.

Washburn (21-24, 19-20 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Blake Boling reached on an error and later scored on an Andy Petz infield single. The Tigers (26-20, 23-17 MIAA) tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the first. Brandon Hoefler led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a sac bunt and scored on JC Ochoa's sacrifice fly to right.

The 'Bods regained the lead in the top of the second when David Wade scored on a Cameron Kasel fielder's choice. Wade was hit by a pitch leading off, went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a bunt single by Travis Cruz.

Nash Smith homered in the third inning for Fort Hays State to tie the game at 2-2. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Sloan Soulia had a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 and Anthony Salinas drove in two with a single to left center to make it 5-2.

Washburn got two runs back in the top of the sixth to pull within 5-4. Tyler Bean walked and later scored an unearned run and Cruz scored when Blake Boling was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

FHSU pushed the lead back to three at 7-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Hoefler doubled home Sheldon Howell and later scored on a double by Smith, but the Ichabods rallied for four runs in the seventh to get the win. Bean doubled home Dane Simoneau to start the rally. After Wade walked, Cruz doubled in another run to make it 7-6. A sac fly by Kasel tied the game and Boone Plager finished off the rally with a run-scoring single to make it 8-7.

Seth Huninghake (1-0) got the win in relief for Washburn allowing three runs on five hits in three innings. Kerry Schachenmeyer pitched a scoreless seventh for his fourth save of the season. Xavier Lewis allowed four runs on six hits in four innings as the starter.

Tyler Treinen (1-3) took the loss for Fort Hays State after allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Ichabods jumped on top early in game two with three first inning runs by way of a Dane Simoneau home run. The Tigers got two runs back in the bottom half when Sloan Soulia and Anthony Salinas each drove in runs.

WU added a single run in the second to push the lead to 4-2. Cameron Kasel doubled and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a throwing error. Fort Hays State answered with a single run of its own in the bottom half of the frame.

The 'Bods plated two more runs in the top of the third to extend the lead to 6-3 when David Wade launched a two-run homer to left center, it was his team-leading eighth home run of the season. Marcus Peavler had an RBI groundout in the fourth to give WU a 7-3 lead.

The Tigers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to draw within one at 7-6 and a three-run blast off the bat of Nash Smith in the sixth gave Fort Hays State a 9-7 lead. The Tigers plated a pair of insurance runs in the eighth with back-to-back extra-base hits by Hoefler and Smith.

Eric Schmid (0-1) took the loss for Washburn after allowing three runs on three hits in one inning of relief.

Brett Macari (4-0) earned the win for the Tigers after giving up seven runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Connor Beer picked up his first save of the season allowing just one hit in two innings of relief.

The Ichabods wrap up the regular season portion of their schedule this Saturday and Sunday hosting Pittsburg State. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. with Sunday's doubleheader slated for a noon start.
