OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues seventh inning rally fell short as a 5-3 loss to Fort Hays State in the MIAA Tournament ended the season. Washburn wrapped up the season 19-29 overall.
Washburn starter Danielle Fox (9-16) held the Tigers without a hit until the start of the fourth inning when Erin Dyok broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the frame. The Tigers would then score two runs - both unearned - on a sac fly by Britney Workman and a RBI double by Kayla Rupa. The Tigers added three more in the sixth inning on a three-run homer by Taylor Nelson.
Washburn got on the board with a single by Hilary Weatherford scoring Lindsey Himpel, who pinch ran for Alex Zordel after connecting on a double with two outs in the inning.
Washburn's rally came up short in the seventh inning as they scored two runs, but were doubled off at third base ending the threat. To start the inning, Shelby Erickson, Lindsey Moore and Marissa Martin had back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases for pinch hiiter Jackie Horejsi, who singled to deep right field scoring both Moore and Erickson. A sac bunt by Katie Schroeder moved the runner up a base, but Zordel's line drive was snagged at third who doubled off Martin ending the game.
Erickson and Martin had two hits to lead Washburn's nine-hit attack. Horejsi had two RBI for the Lady Blues. Fox struck out five in the game allowing three earned runs giving away to Kelsie Novotny in the fifth inning.
