TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were swept in the final regular season doubleheader 8-3 and 5-1 by Pittsburg State on Sunday afternoon, Senior Day, at Falley Field. Washburn still qualified for the MIAA tournament by virtue of Fort Hays State's win over Missouri Southern.

The Gorillas (20-30, 16-29 MIAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one on a Ryan Bilovesky RBI fielder's choice. Four hits and an error led to five PSU runs in the fourth to give the Gorillas a 6-0 lead. Pitt State added two more runs in the fifth and led 8-0.

Washburn (22-27, 20-23 MIAA) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late. Andy Petz had an RBI fielder's choice as did Dane Simoneau and David Wade added an RBI double for WU.

Ryan Hintze (4-6) got the win for PSU allowing three runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings.

A second inning RBI groundout gave the Gorillas a 1-0 lead in game two. They tacked on two more unearned runs in the fourth to lead 3-0. The Ichabods tallied one run in the bottom of the fifth. Simoneau led off with a double and went to third on a Tyler Bean single then scored on a Wade sacrifice fly to right field.

The Gorillas added single runs in the seventh and ninth for the 5-1 win.

Daren Parker (2-6) took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits in a complete game effort.

Ryan Sorell (5-4) earned the win for PSU tossing a complete game giving up five hits and one run.

Washburn will enter the MIAA tournament as the No. 6 seed and will play third-seeded Nebraska Omaha on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
