Lady Blues soccer team blanked in season opener

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues opened the season with a 4-0 loss to Incarnate Word on Friday evening. The Lady Blues will travel to Austin, Texas to face St. Edward's on Sunday.

The Cardinals (1-0-0) jumped on the Lady Blues (0-0-1) early in the seventh minute when Amber Guenther scored the first of her two goals in the match on an assist from Sasha Vrany. Jasma Latu added to the Cardinals' lead scoring off a rebound off the post using her head in the 30th minute putting the Cardinals up 2-0 going into the halftime break.

Washburn held Incarnate Word scoreless until the 72:21 mark of the match when Guenther notched her second goal on an assist from Sarah Johnson and then Johnson scored a goal of her own with under 10 minutes to play in the match putting the Cardinals up 4-0.

Washburn was out shot 17 to 8 in the match including a 9 to 3 Cardinal advantage in the opening half.

Leah Talley led the Lady Blues with three shots with all of them coming on goal. Caysie Beetley had two shots for the Lady Blues.

Tori Fuglister (0-1-0) allowed two goals picking up six saves in 63 minutes of action. Mallorie Monhollon came on in relief giving up the other two goals collecting a save.
