The Washburn Lady Blues will look for their first winning streak of the season as they travel to Emporia, Kan., to face the Emporia State Hornets at 4 p.m. on the ESU Soccer Pitch. Washburn (1-5-1, 1-0-0 MIAA) is coming off its first win of the season after dropping Fort Hays State 2-0 on Sept. 17. The Hornets are looking for their first win of the season as they enter the match with a 0-3-3 overall record. The match against Washburn is the Hornets' first MIAA match of the season.
Story lines
• Washburn is looking for its 13th straight win over the Hornets as they lead the all-time series 12-3-1.
• Washburn has not lost to Emporia State since a 2-0 loss on Nov. 7, 2004.
• Over the 12-game winning streak, Washburn has outscored the Hornets 28 to 7.

• Washburn only has one match this weekend and will not be in action until Sept. 29 when they will host Missouri Western at 6 p.m. in Yager Stadium.

The Hornets are 0-3-3 this season and will play their first MIAA match of the season against the Lady Blues.
About the coach:
Bryan Sailer is 0-3-3 in his first season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season. As a coach between high school and junior college he compiled a record of 244-68-12 over 18 seasons.
About the Hornets:
The Hornets are 0-3-3 this season. They are led by Mallory Walden who has two of the ESU four goals this season. Sarah Anderson has two assists. In net, Nikki Schmitz has a 0.58 goal against average in 310 minutes of play.
Series history with the Hornets: Thursday's meeting will be the 17th in the series with the Lady Blues leading the all-time series 12-3-1. Washburn has won the last 12 in a row while outscoring the Hornets 28 to 7 over that stretch. Washburn has not lost to the Hornets since a 2-0 setback on Nov. 7, 2004.

Last time out for Emporia State:
(Sept. 18) – September 18, 2011 -- The Emporia State soccer team outshot Missouri Western 17-9, but could not overcome two first half goals in a 2-1 loss. The Hornets were outshot 8-6 on goal as all of the scoring occurred in the first half.
Missouri Western got on the board first in the 27th minute as Katie Kempf scored from just outside the box of a foul restart. MWSU added their second tally last in the half in the 42nd minute as Ashley Juravich scored off a Kempf pass. ESU would answer as Hannah Carlson hit a shot from just outside the box on a foul restart to cut the lead to one. In goal Katrina Goscha finished with three saves while Natalie Hoernig finished with two.

(Oct. 28, 2010) – EMPORIA, Kan. -- Washburn's
Markie Gallagher scored on a header on an assist from
Leah Talley leading the Lady Blues to a 1-0 double overtime win over Emporia State securing Washburn's 12th straight win over the Hornets in the series. Gallagher's goal came at the 103:36 mark of the match.
The goal was Gallagher's second of the season and third for the senior in her final match against Emporia State. She is part of the third straight senior class to go 8-0 against Emporia State in their Washburn career.
After the first 90 minutes of action, the Lady Blues (5-7-3, 5-6-2 MIAA) outshot the Hornets (1-9-5, 1-8-4 MIAA) 10 to 4 and in the overtime period the Washburn continued the pressure outshooting the Hornets 6 to 2 including 3 to 0 in the second overtime period finishing with a 16 to 6 advantage overall.
Ashley Klone picked up her 16th career shutout and her second straight collecting four saves in the match. Talley and Gallagher each had three shots overall.
Last time out for the Lady Blues
(Sept. 17, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. - The Lady Blues scored two late goals to break open a scoreless game as they defeated Fort Hays State 2-0 Saturday. Washburn (1-5-1, 1-0-0 MIAA) got its first win of the season and more importantly, won its MIAA opener.
Caysie Beetley had one of her four shots hit the post midway through the first half. Finally, with about 12 minutes remaining in the game she found the back of the net.
Megan Buckley sent her a pass from midfield and she lofted it over FHSU goalkeeper Kelsey Grey's head for her first of the year. Buckley got her second assist.
Leah Talley gave the Lady Blues some insurance seven minutes later. She had an open shot in the box that deflected off Grey and she fired it back in for her second of the year.
Washburn edged the Tigers, 10-9 in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal. The Lady Blues took five corner kicks while FHSU took two.
The Tigers, playing their first ever MIAA game as a new program had some chances early in the second half to get get on the board first. Hailey Davey took an open pass in the left side of the box but barely got a foot on it before it went over the touch line. It went just wide of the goal and out of play. Three minutes later Davey hit the post.
Mallorie Monhollon improved to 1-2-0 with the win. She stopped FHSU's only shot on goal while working all 90 minutes.
Talley took three shots for Washburn, putting two on net. Buckey added two shots.
