TOPEKA, Kan. - Washburn's 12th straight set victory didn't come easy but the Lady Blues were able to hold off a late Griffon charge in a 25-12, 25-16, 26-24 win Saturday afternoon at Lee Arena.
The No. 6 Lady Blues improved to 11-1 and 4-0 in the MIAA while Missouri Western fell to 5-6 and 1-2. Washburn will play on the road Tuesday at Newman in a 7 p.m. match before returning home to host the Ramada Inn Lady Blues Fall Classic next Friday and Saturday.
Hillary Hughes led Washburn with nine kills and
Mollie Lacy added five and led the Lady Blues with six blocks.
Washburn blocked 13 attacks on the day and MWSU had six blocks.
Jessica Fey came off the bench for seven kills and five blocks.
The Lady Blues used their height late in the third set to avoid giving Missouri Western a set win. The Griffons led by five, 22-17 before Washburn went on a 5-0 run to tie the set. The final three points in the run came off blocks from Fey,
Breanna Lewis and
Jessica Kopp.
The Griffons went up again and then forced set point at 24-23. Washburn scored three more times to close out the sweep. Kopp and then Hughes got kills and then Kopp served an ace for the win.
Abby Wittman led with 18 assists and
Gracie Petersen added 13. They helped lead the Washburn offense to 44 kills and a .270 attack percentage. MWSU hit .034 with 28 kills.
Kelsey Lewis played libero the first two sets and recorded 12 digs.
Courtney Churchman got eight in the third set.
Washburn kept the Griffons out of the first two sets by finishing strong. An 8-1 run to close set one gave WU a 13-point win and a 5-1 run to close the second set gave WU a nine-point win.
