Scene Setter
The Washburn Lady Blues will look to get back in the win column as they will host Missouri Western on Thursday in Yager Stadium at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match and then travel to Bolivar, Mo., to face the Bearcats in a match which will count in the MIAA standings. Washburn is coming off a 1-0 loss at Emporia State in which the Hornets snapped the Lady Blues 12-game winning streak over ESU.
Story lines
• The Lady Blues are 5-1-0 against the Griffons in games played in Topeka with Missouri Western getting its first win over Washburn in Yager Stadium in the last game played on Oct. 21, 2010 in a 2-1 win.
• The Lady Blues and Bearcats have gone into overtime in six matches played and in all six neither team has scored ending the match in a double overtime tie.
• Washburn has been shutout in six of its eight matches this season - the school record for most times being shutout in a season is seven set by four different Lady Blues squads (2003, 2004, 2009, 2010).
About Missouri Western
Griffon notes:
The Griffons are 2-3-0 this season and have yet to play a conference match. The Washburn match will not count as an MIAA match for either team on Thursday.
About the coach:
Chad Edwards is the third women's soccer coach in MWSU school history taking over the program in August of 2011 going 2-3-0 in his first season. Edwards comes to MWSU after three seasons as the assistant men's and women's soccer coach at Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri. Edwards played a vital role in the day to day operations of both the men's and women's programs and is the Director of the Avila Elite Soccer Camps.
About the Griffons:
The Griffons are led by K.C. Rmasell who has five of the Griffons' seven goals this season. She has 11 shots on goal in 16 attempts. Kelly Voigts has a 1.39 goal against average playing 454 minutes in net.

Thursday's meeting will be the 13th in the series and the Lady Blues lead the all-time series 9-3-0. The Griffons won last season in Topeka 2-1. The Lady Blues have outscored the Griffons 32 to 6 in the 12 meetings and they are 5-1-0 all-time against MWSU in Topeka.

Last time out for Missouri Western:
(Sept. 24) – ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A poor second half by the Missouri Western women's soccer cost them in their home opener against the Fort Hays State Tigers. The Tigers used two second half goals dropping Western by a score of 2-1 in its home opener at Spratt Stadium.
For the second straight contest the Missouri Western women's soccer team took a one goal lead into the half. K.C. Ramsell scored her fifth goal of the season off an Ashlyn Castillo assist giving Western the 1-0 in the 14th minute.
Kelly Voigts had four saves in the frame while the Tigers had six shots. Joanne Glynn had two shots for Hays with both finding the net. Western had eight shots with four on goal. Ramsell had two shots with both finding the net. Kelsey Grey had three saves for the Tigers.
Western had five fouls to the Tigers three while the Tigers had one corner kick to the Griffons zero.
The Tigers outshot the Griffons 15-5 in the second half and 8-5 in shots on goal. The Tigers tied the score at one in the 50th minute when Glynn took a pass from Cindy Benitez pass and blasted it past Voigts. Fort Hays State kept up the pressure and for the second time in the game Benitez found Glynn giving the Tigers the 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute of action.
Western tried to mount a comeback but time would run out as the Tigers improve to 3-4-1 overall in their first season as a program. Glynn has scored four goals on the season while Benitez has four assists. Grey made eight saves improving to 3-4-1 on the season. Glynn had eight shot with all eight being on goal for the Tigers.
Voigts made 10 saves as she falls to 2-3 on the season. Ashley Juravich had three of the Griffons 13 shots while Ramsell, Emily Hoffman and Teresa Offerman each had two. Western was outshot by eight in the game (21-13) and had two more fouls than the Tigers (10-8).
Last meeting with Missouri Western:
(Oct. 21, 2010) – TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues surrendered a late goal and fell 2-1 in a lightning delayted game to Missouri Western on Thursday night at Yager Stadium.
The Lady Blues (3-7-3, 3-6-2 MIAA) struck first on a penalty kick from
Ashley Hynek in the fifth minute. The Griffons (2-7-5, 2-5-5 MIAA) tied the game in the 44th minute when Heather Schmiemeier put the ball in the back of the net with :02 remaining in the half. She was assisted on the goal by Mary Ohm. Just after the first half ended the game was delayed due to lightning in the area. The second half resumed after a 1:22 delay.
Missouri Western scored the game-winner with just over four minutes to play when Audrey Henderson took a pass from Ashley Grunder and beat the keeper to put MWSU in front.
Ashley Klone made three saves in net for the Lady Blues, while Jenna Weis made four saves for Missouri Western.
About Southwest Baptist
Bearcat notes:
The Bearcats are 1-6-1 and 0-1-0 in the MIAA entering a Thursday night match with Central Missouri on Sept. 29. The match against the Lady Blues will count as an MIAA match for the teams on Saturday.
About the coach:
Bearcat head coach Rob Podeyn enters his third season, and looks to further improve a program that last year went 6-9-3. Over his first three years, Podeyn has recorded a career mark of 14-24-7. Rob Podeyn became the eighth head coach in SBU history when he accepted the position. He joined the Bearcats after serving as director of soccer operations, assistant sports information director and head women's soccer coach at Northwood University, positions he held since 2006.
About the Bearcats:
Kelly Isaac leads the Bearcats scoring four of their five goals this season. Megan Link has a 2.01 goal against average in net recording 77 saves.
Series history with the Bearcats:
Saturday's meeting will be the 17th in the series and the Bearcats lead 4-6-6 all-time. Six of the 16 matches have gone into overtime. Washburn is 2-3-2 in matches played in Bolivar.

Last time out for Southwest Baptist:
(Sept. 24) – Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats had a tough match Saturday afternoon against Truman State. SBU fared well against Truman, but ultimately fell short in double overtime against the Bulldogs, 3-2.
Kelly Isaac scored two goals for the Bearcats receiving her third and fourth goal of the season. SBU had nine shot attempts with six of them coming form Isaac. Goalkeeper, Megan Link, had 15 saves on the afternoon for SBU.
Last meeting with Southwest Baptist:
(Nov. 4, 2010) – TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up the home slate of the 2010 season with a 2-2 double overtime tie against Southwest Baptist.
Neither team scored in the extra fame as they combined for 10 shots in the two overtimes with Washburn (5-8-4, 5-7-3 MIAA) outshooting the Bearcats (6-8-3, 5-7-3 MIAA) 7 to 3 including a 5 to 2 in the first overtime while going into the wind.
Tia Stovall broke the 1-1 tie score coming out of halftime at the 45:30 mark of the match as she broke free on putting the ball into the back corner of the net past SBU's Megan Link one half minute into the second half. Kelly Isaac scored her second goal of the evening in the 68th minute from 15 yards out into the opposite corner of the net knotting the score at 2-2.
The Lady Blues had a great chance in the 80th minute when Stovall's shot pounded off the crossbar and the follow shot before being cleared by one of the Bearcat defender.
Issac scored the first goal of the match in the fifth minute on an assist from Lindsey Boden from 8-yards out. Washburn tied the score on a
Lauren Henry goal in the 23rd minute, but lost Henry for the remainder of the match as she collided with SBU's goalkeeper Link in the process.
The Lady Blues were out shot 8 to 6 in the opening half while the Bearcats were going with a stiff breeze to the south end of the field.
Ashley Klone had several key saves in the first half including back-to-back saves on Southwest Baptist's Shonee Samia on shots from 18 yards out on a deflection while pulling the ball into herself on the follow shot as Samia had a breakaway opportunity.
Klone finished with 13 saves in the match allowing the two goals to the Bearcats. Stovall recorded a match-high seven shots with three shots on goal and the second half goal and the first half assist off of Henry's fourth goal of the season.
Caysie Beetley had two shots on goal and four shots along with
Leah Talley who also had four shots.
Washburn finished with a 25 to 19 advantage in shots and a 6 to 3 mark in corner kicks.
Last time out for the Lady Blues
(Sept. 22, 2011) EMPORIA, Kan. -
Caysie Beetley put four shots on goal but Emporia State scored the only goal of the game late in the second half in a 1-0 win over Washburn Thursday night.
Washburn fell to 1-6-1 overall in the non-conference matchup. The Lady Blues will continue action next Thursday in a 6 p.m. match against Missouri Western at Yager Stadium.
Beetley put two shots on net early in the second period but Hornet goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz saved them both. She ended up saving all eight of Washburn's shots on goal.
The Hornets got the game-winner in the 85th minute when Catie Hyde scored her first of the year off an assist from Shannon Thomas.
Mallorie Monhollon made seven saves in goal for the Lady Blues playing all 90 minutes.
ESU edged Washburn in shots, 13-12 and corner kicks, 4-3. The Hornets won their first match and improved to 1-3-3.
