Washburn looks to continue winning ways at SBU on Tuesday

Starting introductions
The Washburn Ichabods will look to continue the momentum from 2011 into 2012 as they open the new calendar year at Southwest Baptist on Jan. 3 in Bolivar, Mo. The Ichabods won eight of their last nine games to end 2011 with the lone loss at Northwest Missouri on Dec. 3. The Ichabods have won their last four games entering Tuesday's game with Southwest Baptist. Washburn (9-3, 4-1 MIAA) is coming off a 75-67 road win at Central Missouri on New Year's Eve. Southwest Baptist (7-7, 1-5 MIAA) picked up its first MIAA win topping Emporia State 82-80 last time out on Dec. 31. Washburn returns home on Jan. 7 before returning home to take on Missouri Southern on Jan. 7.

The coaches
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 33rd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is 705-291 (.707) overall and he has 464 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has led the Ichabods to the MIAA Tournament 19 times collecting an all-time league-best 29 wins going 29-16 with a .675 winning percentage during tournament play. In home games, Chipman has amassed a home record of 410-77 (.840) record going 356-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 27-11 against the Bearcats.
Southwest Baptist head Jeff Guiot is in his eighth season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 146-76 (.656) record. Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearances. Guiot has 146 wins in his career at SBU, and is one wins away from the becoming the winningest coach in SBU history.

Last time out for the Ichabods • WU 75, UCM 67 • 12/31/11
WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods snapped an eight-game losing streak at Central Missouri picking up a 75-67 win over the Mules wrapping up the 2011 calendar year. The Ichabods (9-3, 4-1 MIAA) will be back in action on Tuesday at Southwest Baptist.
The Ichabods led by 15 at 54-39 with 13:40 to play in the game before the Mules trimmed the lead to four at 58-54 with 6:04 to go. Washburn would go on a mini 5-0 run on a 3-pointer by Bobby Chipman and a turnover by the Mules with a dunk by Will McNeill put Washburn up nine at 63-54 with 5:23 to go.
The Mules (8-4, 3-3 MIAA) cut the lead back to five with just over four minutes to play after a jumper by Matt Webb, but the ichabods responded with a 3-pointer by Martin Mitchell with 3:47 to play putting the Ichabods up 66-58. However the Mules answered with a 3-pointer by their own by Boo Hunter with 3:17 cutting Washburn's lead to five at 66-61. A free throw by the Mules' Lance Beckwith with 2:37 to go cut the Ichabod lead to four at 66-62.
After forcing a turnover, the Ichabods McNeill was fouled going to the hole with 1:06 remaining, but came up empty.
The Mules' Widgett Washington was fouled on a drive with 42 seconds left and hit both free throws cutting the Ichabod lead to 66-64. Following a UCM timeout, Washington fouled Jeff Reid with 36 seconds left in the game sending him to the free throw line. Reid hit them both stretching Washburn's lead back to four at 68-64.
The Mules came up empty on their next trip down the court and Chipman came down with the rebound. The Mules fouled and McNeill went back to the line with 20 seconds left and hit them both giving Washburn a six-point lead at 70-64.
Hunter connected on a 3-pointer with 13.7 seconds left pulling the Mules within 70-67 as the Mules called their final timeout of the game.
The Ichabods broke the press and Alex North was fouled with 10 seconds left and hit both of his free throws putting Washburn up 72-67 and the Mules threw the ball away on their final possesion turning it back to the the Ichabods. Mitchell was fouled, hit the first free throw, missed his second but got the rebound and hit a jumper wrapping up the 75-67 win.
The Ichabods led 36-32 at the half after shooting 48 percent from the field hitting 15 of 31. Washburn struggled from outside going 3 of 11 from 3-point range. The Mules were 11 of 26 including 5 of 10 from downtown. Joseph Smith led the Ichabods in the first half hitting all five field goal attempts scoring 11 points in the first 20 minutes topping his previous career high of eight. Jeff Reid also reached double figures in the first half scoring a season-high 10 points. Washburn led by as many as six in the first half at 36-30 with 1:14 to go in the stanza.
The win was the first for the Ichabods in Warrensburg since a 75-68 win over the Mules on Feb. 15, 2003.
McNeill led the Ichabods with 22 points leading four Ichabods in double figures. He also added five steals as well. Mitchell had 15 points with five assists and five rebounds to lead the team. Reid finished with 12 points and Smith finished with 11 points all coming in the first half.
The Ichabods shot 51 percent from the field hitting 28 of 55 shots of the field. Washburn was 10 of 13 from the field.
Hunter finished with 18 points and Lance Beckwith and Dominique Long each had 12. The Mules finished 22 of 50 from the field while going 15 of 18 from the free throw line. The Mules outrebounded the Ichabods 33 to 24. Washburn forced 20 Central Missouri turnovers leading to 21 points off turnovers.
Washburn's bench outscored the Mules' bench 23 to 8.   

About Southwest Baptist
Southwest Baptist is 7-7, 1-5 in the MIAA this season after picking up its first conference win last time out against Emporia State 82-80 on Dec. 31. They are led by Ryan Dougherty who is averaging 14.9 ppg. Preston Guiot is averaging 13.9 ppg with a team-high 5.6 apg. Kyle Sloan is averaging 13.3 ppg and Robson Memnon is scoring 10.9 ppg with a team-high 5.2 rpg. SBU is scoring 81.4 ppg while allowing 77.1 ppg. More than half of their 883 field goal attempts have been 3-pointers (440). The Bearcats are 151 of 440 from 3-point range (34 percent) while going 403 of 883 overall (46 percent). SBU is 5-3 in home games this season.

Tuesday's meeting will be the 46th between Washburn and Southwest Baptist with the Ichabods leading the all-time series 30-15. Washburn has won 19 of the last 25 games. Washburn is 25-10 against SBU in MIAA games. The series is the least-played matchup for Washburn against other MIAA teams with 46 games played. The Ichabods have won the last five games played in Topeka and have gone 3-1 against the Bearcats in the MIAA Tournament. In Bolivar, the Ichabods are 10-11 in games played snapping a five-game losing streak with their 87-81 win on Feb. 12, 2011 last year.

(Dec. 31, 2011) – (SBU Media Relations) Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team claimed their first MIAA victory in exciting fashion on Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Hornets of Emporia State, 82-80. The Bearcats had four in double figures in the victory.
The game was relatively close throughout the entire contest, with neither team leading by more than seven points. The Bearcats went into halftime with a 38-36 lead, and were able to pull off a thrilling 82-80 victory. The Bearcats would be down by as many as seven in the second half before taking the lead with two minutes to go in the contest. The Bearcats played outstanding defense in the final two minutes to secure the victory.
The Bearcats had four players in double figures with Ryan Dougherty and Daveion Zellner leading the way with 18 points apiece. Preston Guiot added 16 points, five assists, and a couple of steals for SBU while Robson Memnon gave SBU 11 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.
As a team, the Bearcats shot 46.8 percent from the floor, 24 percent from beyond the arc, and 75 percent from the free throw line. SBU was dominate in the paint, outscoring the Hornets 38-26. There were 17 lead changes during the game, with each team leading by as many as seven.

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from a 14-point deficit to capture the program's 1,400th win in an 87-81 win over Southwest Baptist snapping a two-game losing streak winning in Bolivar for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
Washburn cut the lead to two a 53-51 on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington and then he would tie the score with 10:06 to go with a couple of free throws clawing back from the 14-point defecit.Washburn took a 57-56 lead with 8:33 to go on a free throw by Logan Stutz but a 3-pointer by SBU gave the Bearcats a 59-57 lead just over eight minutes to play.
The Ichabod knotted the score with 7:57 to go after a pair of free throws by Washington at 59-59 and they would take the lead on a lay up by Alex North with 7:15 to go in the game. After an SBU miss, Stutz would hit a lay up of his own on an assist by Jadarren Mumpfield giving Washburn a 63-59 lead with 6:40 to go.
A 3-pointer by Mumpfield pushed the lead to six at 66-60 with 5:40 to go in the game. After SBU came up empty on its next possession, Washburn's Stutz picked up a putback off an Ichabod miss and scored going to the line putting Washburn up 69-60 with five minutes to go.
A pair of free throws by Nate Daniels capped a 14-1 run putting Washburn up 71-60. SBU cut the lead to seven at 73-66 with 3:30 to go after a drive by Tre Smith.
Tomas Brock went to the line and hit two free throws for SBU cutting the lead to five at 73-68 with 3:14 to go. After each team came up empty on their next possession. After an Ichabod timeout, Virgil Philistin scored on a driving lay up and was fouled after a Bearcat turnover. Philitin hit one free throw putting Washburn up 76-68 with 1:52 to go.
The Bearcats were fouled and hit both free throws cutting the Washburn lead to six at 76-60 with just over 90 seconds to play. Philistin was fouled and hit both free throws with 1:12 to go putting Washburn up eight at 78-70.
A 3-pointer by SBU's Smith cut the lead to five at 78-73 with 24.6 to go in the game. A dunk by Stutz put Washburn up 85-81. Stutz finished up the game with a pair of free throws locking up the 87-81 win.
The Ichabods trailed by as many as 14 in the first half at 37-23 before the Ichabods before Washburn's Mitch Allen and Bobby hit back-to-back 3-pointers cutting the lead to eight before the end of the half. In the opening 20 minutes, the Ichabods were outshot from the free throw line 18 to 8 as SBU connected on 14 compared to eight for the Ichabods. Washburn was 10 of 29 from the field while the Bearcats were 11 of 24.
Washington led the Ichabods with 22 points going 13 of 18 from the free throw line and Stutz finished with 19 and Philistin scored 11 off the bench. Lane Barlow scored 17 to lead four Bearcats in double figures.
Washburn shot a blistering 68 percent from the field in the second half hitting 15 of 22 attempts including 4 of 9 3-point attempts. The Ichabods finished the game 29 of 39 from the free throw line going 23 of 31 in the second half after attempting only eight in the first 20 minutes. Each team had 34 rebounds.

Ichabod Basketball HIstory
Washburn is 1,413-977 (.590 in 2,390 games) in its 106th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the 10th-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 464-207 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

The Ichabods are 356-65 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 28th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
