The Washburn Ichabods return home for the first time since Dec. 17 when they will face the No. 14-ranked Missouri Southern Lions at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 7 in Lee Arena. Washburn (9-4, 4-2 MIAA) had its four-game winning streak snapped after falling at Southwest Baptist on Jan. 3 80-69. The Lions (12-2, 5-2 MIAA) are coming off a 82-73 win over Emporia State last time out. After facing the Lions, the Ichabods will return to the road to face Pittsburg State on Jan. 11 then they will face Emporia State on Jan. 14 in the Turnpike Tussle in Lee Arena on Jan. 14 before hitting the road again to play Lincoln on Jan. 18.

Bob Chipman is in his 33rd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is 705-292 (.707) overall and he has 464 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has led the Ichabods to the MIAA Tournament 19 times collecting an all-time league-best 29 wins going 29-16 with a .675 winning percentage during tournament play. In home games, Chipman has amassed a home record of 410-77 (.840) record going 356-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 38-21 against the Lions.
Missouri Southern head Robert Corn is in his 23rd season as head coach at Missouri Southern and has guided the Lions to 18 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament berths (13 straight) and three trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1999-00 Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year, he holds a career record of 365-277 (.566) at Southern, and is the winningest head coach in Lions basketball history. A 1978 graduate of Southern, he has led Southern to seven 20-win seasons. He is 17-25 against the Ichabods.

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- A 3-point onslaught midway through the second half was too much for the Ichabods to overcome as the Washburn Ichabods fell at Southwest Baptist 80-69 snapping their four-game winning streak in the process. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Lee Arena when they will face Missouri Southern.
The Ichabods (9-4, 4-2 MIAA) had pulled within one at 52-51 with 8:41 to play after a drive by
Will McNeill, but the Bearcats went on a 10-0 run after hitting back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to build a 62-51 lead with 6:28 remaining in the game.
After the teams traded buckets,
Alex North hit his first field goal of the game with a 3-pointer cutting Southwest Baptist's lead to seven at 64-57 with 3:37 remaining.
The Ichabods cut the lead back to seven again with 2:10 remaining after a pair of free throws by McNeill. SBU hit one free throw and the North hit a 3-pointer for the Ichabods to cut the lead to five at 67-62 with 1:55 to go.
Washburn called a timeout and after an Ichabod foul, the Bearcats hit one of two free throws and
Martin Mitchell scored on a drive to cut the Bearcat lead to four with 1:25 remaining at 68-64.
The Ichabods called another timeout and SBU Mitchell fouled Preston Guiot to send him to the line when he hit both free throws staking the Bearcats back to a six point lead at 70-64 with 1:06 to play.
Washburn came up empty on their next possession on two attempts and SBU went back to the line.
The Ichabods would cut the lead to four with 28 seconds left after a pair of SBU free throws after a long 3-pointer by McNeill giving him his 28th point of the night forcing a Bearcat timeout leading 73-69.
An intentional foul and bucket by Robson Memnon put the Bearcats up seven after the free throw at 76-69 and returning the ball back to the Bearcats.
SBU would hit their last three free throws to wrap up the game and the 11-point win at 80-69.
The Ichabods trailed by four at the break after McNeill connected on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer pulling Washburn within four at 36-32 as the Bearcats took the lead into the halftime locker room.
McNeill led the Ichabods with 28 points adding three steals. Mitchell had 17 points and
Alex North scored 10.
Joseph Smith had a career-high 11 rebounds with nine coming on the defensive end.
Ryan Dougherty led the Bearcats with 18 points.
The Bearcats connected on 11 3-pointer in the game attempting 37 overall. The Bearcats hit 23 field goals overall in the game and went 23 of 36 from the free throw line. SBU also outrebounded the Ichabods 47 to 34.
Washburn finished 22 of 52 from the field overall and went 6 of 17 from behind the 3-point line. Washburn was 19 of 27 from the free throw line.
The teams combined for 47 fouls with the Ichabods being whistled for 24. Four Ichabods (Smith,
Jeff Reid, Mitchell and
Bobby Chipman) all fouled out.
About Missouri Southern
The Lions are 12-2 this season and 5-2 in the MIAA. The Lions are currently ranked No. 14 in the NABC top 25 poll and were ranked as high as No. 1 prior to a loss to Missouri Western. Keane Thomann is averaging 22.1 ppg to lead the Lions while Jason Adams is scoring 19.9 ppg. Thomann is averaging a team-high 8.6 rpg. Overall the Lions are averaging 87.9 ppg while allowing 71.1 ppg. They have attempted five more free throws than their opponents have this season and are +6.0 on the glass in rebound margin.
Series history with Missouri Southern
Saturday's meeting will be the 71st between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69. Washburn leads the all-time series 45-25. Washburn is 22-12 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-10 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90. The Ichabods have lost five in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a 60-56 win. The two teams have met at least once a year since 1976-77. The Ichabods are 3-2 against the Lions in the MIAA Tournament. In games played in Topeka, the Ichabods are 27-8 overall and 20-5 in games played in Lee Arena. The teams have met twice in the NCAA Tournament - on March 10, 2000 when the Lions picked up a 79-73 overtime win in Joplin and on March 12, 2011 when the Lions topped the Ichabods in overtime again 82-79 in Edmond, Okla.

(Jan. 5, 2012) – (MSSU Media Relations) Joplin, Mo. -- The 14th ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team held off a late run from a pesky Emporia State team and the Lions re-took first place in the MIAA with an 82-73 win over the Hornets. Southern (12-2, 5-2 MIAA) was led offensively by Keane Thomann as the senior had 27 points and ten rebounds on 10-19 shooting. A bucket by Thomann wiht 3:18 left in the first half moved him into the top ten all-time in scoring at Southern. He now has 1,187 points in his career and is all alone in tenth place.
Marquis Addison scored 18 points on 4-7 shooting from long range, and Jason Adams had 16 points and five assists. Patrick Hester had six points and vie assists as the Lions assisted on 18 of 29 made shots.
Emporia (7-5, 3-3 MIAA) had four players score in double-figures with Andonio DiMaria leading the way, scoring 16 and pulling down six boards.
The teams traded buckets until the Lions opened up a five point lead with 10:31 left in the first half after a jumper from Adams made the score 17-12. A three from DiMaria cut the Lions' lead to one (19-18), but a quick 7-0 run by the Lions pushed their lead to eight at 26-18 with six minutes left. Southern's lead was 11 (38-27) after a jumper from Steven Atkinson with 1:46 to go and a pair of free throws from Hester as time expired gave the Lions an 13 point lead at the half.
A lay up from Thomann with 17:43 left in the second half gave the Lions a 19 point lead (51-32). However, a layup from the Hornets' Travis Dykman with 11:58 left in the second half and a three from Taylor Euler with 7:12 left cut the Lion's lead to just six on each occasion. A pair of freebies from Dykman made the score 74-73 with 2:46 left, but a three from Christian Salecich the next trip down put the game away.
Southern will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Lions travel to Washburn to take on the Ichabods.

EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod basketball season came to an end with an overtime heartbreaking loss to No. 9 Missouri Southern in the NCAA South Central Regional Quarterfinals with an 82-79 loss ending their season 18-10.
Trailing 70-67 after Missouri Southern's Marquis Addison with four seconds to go, Washburn's
De'Andre Washington answered with one of his own with one second left sending the game into overtime. The game marked the second time in NCAA play the Ichabods and the Lions needed the extra five minutes to decide a winner as the Lions also took a 79-73 win in Joplin during the 2000 NCAA South Central Regional.
In the overtime frame, the Ichabods took an early lead on a free throw by
Logan Stutz putting Washburn up 71-70. Washburn stretched the lead to three after the teams traded baskets on a free throw by
Virgil Philistin at 78-75 with 45 seconds to go. A jumper by Missouri Southern's Jason Adams cut the lead to one, but Stutz hit a free throw putting Washburn up two at 79-77. Adams then banked a 3-pointer off the glass to put the Lions up for good. The Ichabods turned it over on their next possession and the Lions hit both free throws after an Ichabod foul. Washburn ten missed a three with six seconds remaining and they did not get off another shot ending the chance at a tie and a second overtime.
Stutz led the Ichabods with 28 points and 13 rebounds recording his ninth double double of his Washburn career and the seventh of the season. His 24 free throw attempts were one shy of the school record held by Jerry Milner, who attempted 25 during the 1958-59 season. Stutz's 28 points were the highest by an Ichabod in NCAA Postseason play since Ewan Auguste scored 29 in the NCAA National Semfinals in a win over Western Washington in Bakersfield, Calif. Washington finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds notching his 16 double double of his Washburn career.
Adams finished with 29 points to lead the Lions while Skyler Bowlin scored 22 before fouling out.
After holding the Lions to 35 percent shooting in the first half, the Lions hit 10 of 20 shots in the second half including 17 of 25 free throws while the Ichabods shot 39 percent in both halves while going 12 of 18 from the charity stripe in the second half. In the overtime frame, the Ichabods were 1 of 4 from the field and 7 of 14 from the free throw line while the Lions were 3 of 7 from the field and 5 of 8 from the free throw line.
The Ichabods finished 27 of 46 from the free throw line in the game.
There were 18 lead changes in the game and 13 score ties with Washburn leading by eight late in the first half and the Lions leading the Ichabods by seven early in the first after scoring the first seven points of the game.

Washburn is 1,413-978 (.590 in 2,391 games) in its 106th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the 10th-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 464-208 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.
