WARRENSBURG, Mo. --
Jessica Fey had 29 kills and 33.5 points in No. 4 Washburn's 3-2 (25-24, 19-25, 25-18, 27-29, 18-16) win against the No. 7 Jennies as the Lady Blues won at Central Missouri for just the fourth time in school history.
The Lady Blues improved to 20-1 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA while the Jennies fell to 16-4 and 8-1 in the league. The two sit in a tie atop the conference standings. The two were playing for the eighth straight time as top-10 opponents and the 25th straight time when they were both ranked anywhere in the AVCA national poll.
Fey's kill total was the third best in school history and her point total was second best. She was one kill away from tying the school record as Tessa Jones (2007) and Becky Hanish (1999) previously had 30-kill matches. The records go back to 1999 when single-match statistics were first kept.
Fey also moved into an exclusive club as she became just the ninth Lady Blue to get 1,000 kills and 300 blocks. She already reached the kill milestone and her first block at UCM put her at 300.
Mollie Lacy also joined that club last year, the last Lady Blue to do so.
The Lady Blues held match point five times, twice in the fourth set and three times in the fifth set, before clinching the contest on their sixth try. Fey's 29th point got Washburn to 17-16 and then a UCM error ended the match.
There were 14 ties in the fifth set and neither team lead by more than two. The fourth set saw even more knots with 22 ties and 11 lead changes and the entire match featured 47 ties and 20 lead changes.
Jessica Kopp added 15 kills, tying her career high for the third time.
Hillary Hughes had 12 kills and 14 digs for a double-double and
Courtney Churchman had a career- and team season-high 26 digs.
Kelsey Lewis had 23 digs and
Abby Wittman added 17 to give Washburn four players with double-figure digs as the team dug up 100 Jennie attacks.
Wittman added a season-high 56 assists as she led Washburn's offense to 70 kills and a .217 attack percentage. The Jennies hit .178 and had 67 kills and 88 digs. Each team had 11 blocks.
The Lady Blues were down 8-5 in the opening set but later used a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. Kopp had two kills and a block during that run. The Jennies later got within one at 18-17 and 23-22 but after a UCM attack error that got Washburn to set point, Fey closed it out with a kill.
The Jennies tied the match with a win in the second set. They were up 21-16 before Washburn scored three straight but no further points as a 4-0 run ended the set for the Jennies.
The Lady Blues were down 5-0 in the third set but quickly tied the match at 6-6. A 3-0 run later gave the Lady Blues a 15-11 lead and a 4-0 run closed the set and gave Washburn a 2-1 match lead.
The Jennies tied the fourth set for the 12th time at 13-13 and that started a 4-0 run that gave them a 16-13 lead. Three kills from Fey during a 4-1 Washburn run tied it again at 17-17 and there were three more ties before Washburn got to match point at 24-23 on a UCM attack error. The Jennies then scored two straight and three of four to get a 26-25 lead. Two straight kills from Fey gave Washburn another shot at clinching the match with a 27-26 lead, but the Jennies scored three straight to stay alive and force Washburn's third five-setter of the year.
This is the second time in three years Washburn has won at Central Missouri but just the fourth time in school history. Overall, the Jennies lead the series 13-47.
Fey ended the match with five blocks and an ace to get her to 33.5 points. The school record is 36.5 points in 1999 by Jill Gassen. Kopp had four blocks and Marrisa Cox had three to go along with seven kills.
Carly Sojka led the Jennies with 17 kills and Aubri Renshaw had 15. Each of them added double-figure digs for double-doubles.
