Lady Blues push Lee Arena winning streak to 50 straight with win over FHSU

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Lady Blues won their 50th straight match in Lee Arena in a 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16 victory over Fort Hays State. No. 3 Washburn improved to 26-1 overall and 12-1 in the MIAA.
 
The Lady Blues will play three straight on the road, starting with a 7 p.m. match Friday at Pittsburg State. Fort Hays State fell to 23-11 and 7-8 in the MIAA.
 
Marissa Cox led Washburn with 15 kills and she hit .400 with three blocks. Jessica Fey had a hand on seven of Washburn's 12 blocks and she added 13 kills with a .357 attack percentage. Jessica Kopp blocked five shots with 13 kills as well.
 
Abby Wittman set 45 assists and had 13 digs for a double-double. Courtney Churchman and Hillary Hughes shared the team high with 15 digs each and Kelsey Lewis had 13 to go with nine kills.
 
The fourth set was close midway through at 16-15 but Washburn ended the match on a 9-1 run to get the win. Fey had a kill to get Washburn to 22-16 and then she had the clincher.
 
The Tigers opened the second set on a 4-1 and then 9-3 run. The Tigers never trailed after that but Washburn was able to tie it at 15 after a 6-0 run. Cox had two kills in the run and Hughes had an ace. The Tigers answered with eight of the next 11 points to go up 23-18. Fey got a kill and then an ace and after an FHSU attack error, Washburn was down 23-21. The Tigers answered with a kill to get to set point before Washurn scored three straight to get within one. Mallory Flagor then ended the set with a kill.
 
It was just the third set this year Washburn lost at home and first in MIAA action.
 
Washburn hit .342 and won easy in the first set and hit just .020 in the second set to allow FHSU the win. The Tigers blocked six Washburn attacks in the second set, four in the third set and none in the fourth set.
 
The Lady Blues hit .230 overall while the Tigers hit .106 as a team. Washburn led in kills 59-47 and 71-67 in digs. The Lady Blues had 12 total blocks while FHSU had 11.
 
Madison Schwartz had 21 kills for the Tigers with 13 digs. Jenna Ulrich had nine blocks and nine kills.

With the win, the Lady Blues clinched a home match in the MIAA tournament opener on November 13. The semifinals and finals will be played that weekend at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Washburn has now won 65 of its last 66 matches in Lee Arena and 81 of 83.
