No. 2 Ichabods return home to face Bruins in MIAA warm up

Pregame
The No. 2-ranked Washburn Ichabods return home after a 2-0 weekend trip to St. Mary's in the Rattler Thanksgiving Classic after beating the host squad 67-63 on Nov. 23 and then hammering Minnesota Duluth 86-61 the following night. The Ichabods (5-0) will take on the Bellevue Bruins, the No. 13-ranked team in NAIA Division II out of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.  The Bruins are 6-3 on the season coming off a 81-75 win over Sterling.

'Bod Quick notes
• The Ichabods are ranked No. 2 in the NABC top 25 coaches poll and the coaches pick to win the MIAA this season. 
• Saturday's meeting will be the first with Bellevue since a Nov. 21, 1987 win for the Ichabods over the Bruins in Topeka in a 100-72 win. The two teams have played only once all-time.
• Washburn is looking for its first 6-0 start since the 2004-05 season when they Ichabods went on to a 24-8 record en route to the MIAA regular season championship.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The No. 2-ranked Washburn Ichabods trailed Minnesota Duluth 3-2 for their only deficit of the night cruising to an 85-61 win to improve to 5-0 on the season in their final game of the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic. 
After falling behind 3-2 after scoring the first points of the game Washburn would go on an 18-5 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach as the Ichabods took a 42-31 lead into the halftime break. Washburn used a balanced scoring attack in the first half as seven different players had at least four points.
In the second half, the Bulldogs cut the lead to 10 twice in the frame, but would not get within double digits the remainder of the game as the Ichabods would go on to lead by 25 twice in the game including the final margin at 86-61.
Martin Mitchell led four different Ichabods in double figures scoring 16 points on 6 of 9 from the field. Will McNeill scored 13 with a team high seven rebounds adding four steals and three assists. Bobby Chipman scored 11 and Zack Riggins had 10.
Ben Bucholtz led the Bulldogs with 13 points.
Washburn shot 52 percent from the field hitting 32 of 62 from the field overall going 14 of 25 in the second half. Washburn held the Bulldogs to 15 of 47 from the field in the game for a 32 percent clip including only 7 of 27 from the field in the second half.
Washburn also forced the Bulldogs into 19 turnovers leading to 18 points. Washburn was outrebounded 35 to 32 in the game.

• Saturday's meeting will be the first and the second overall since a 100-72 Washburn win over the Bruins in Lee Arena on Nov. 21, 1987.
About Bellevue
• Bellevue was ranked No. 13 in the latest NAIA Division II Poll entering Saturday's game with a 6-3 record.
• They are coming off 81-75 win over Sterling on Nov. 24.

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 13th-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team erased a 14-point second-half deficit to record an 81-75 victory over Sterling College in the final game of the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic Saturday night at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 
Bellevue (6-3) did not allow a field goal in the final seven minutes of the contest, while escaping with the six-point victory. Sterling fell to 3-5 on the season with the loss. 
Jamil Goodwin tied a season-high with 20 points, while adding five rebounds. Darius Robinson and Dominique Grant added 13 points apiece and Shawn Tarver collected his second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. 
Sterling was led by Raheem Odomes' 26 points. 
After Sterling scored the game's first five points, the Bruins went on a 15-4 run to establish a 15-9 advantage with 13:11 remaining in the first half. The Warriors scored seven-straight points capped by a pair of jumpers from Odomes to regain the lead at 16-15 midway through the period. 
Five-straight points from Odomes gave Sterling a six-point (25-19) lead at 6:51. The Warrior lead reached eight points (32-24) before BU closed the half on an 8-2 run as Sterling went into the intermission with a slim 34-32 advantage.
Goodwin led the Bruins in the opening period with seven points. Adam Brown scored 12 points and Odomes added nine for the Warriors in the opening period which featured four ties and eight lead changes.  
The Warriors grabbed a 10-point lead (58-48) in the first eight minutes of the second half fueled by 11 points from Odomes. A 3-point play by Odomes at 8:59 extended the Warrior lead to 14 points at 68-54.
Sterling maintained a 14-point margin until seven-consecutive points from Grant cut the deficit to seven points (71-64) with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
After a Warrior bucket, the Bruins closed the game on a 17-2 run to collect the 81-75 victory. 
Last meeting with Bellevue
(Nov. 21, 1987) TOPEKA -- Washburn led the Belleuve Bruins 52-39 at the break shot over 50 percent each half en route to a 100-72 win in Lee Arena. 
Joe Becker led three Ichabods in double figures as he connected on 6 of 7 3-point attempts scoring 24 points. Rich Hamilton and Greg Wilson each scored 18 while Wilson led the team with eight rebounds. Becker added four assists as well. 
Washburn outrebounded the Bruins 46 to 34. Derrick Helms led the Bruins with 21 points.

Will McNeill was named a preseason All-American by the Basketball Times. He is the first Ichabod to receive preseason All-American honors since Travis Robbins prior to the 2004-05 season.
