No. 2 Ichabods return to action at undefeated Newman on Saturday

Pregame
The No. 2-ranked Washburn Ichabods will step out of MIAA play as they travel to Wichita, Kan., to face the Newman Jets. The Ichabods (7-0, 1-0 MIAA) are coming off a 91-70 win over Southwest Baptist in their MIAA opener on Dec. 6 while the Jets improved to 8-0 after winning at William Jewell on  Dec. 8 in Liberty, Mo., 86-84. After facing the Jets, Washburn will not take the court until a Jan. 3 home date with Emporia State which will also be a non-conference game. The Feb. 28 match up in Emporia will count as the MIAA game for the Ichabods.

• The Ichabods are ranked No. 2 in the NABC top 25 coaches poll and the coaches pick to win the MIAA this season.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman 
• He is in his 34th season at the helm of the Ichabods.
• Ichabod head coach Bob Chipman is a 1973 graduate of Kansas State earning both his undergraduate and master's degree in Manhattan.
• He is 728-296 overall.
• He has 487 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA, the most of any conference school since the 1989-90 season.
• Has led the Ichabods to 12 MIAA regular season titles and a MIAA-coaching tops of five postseason tournament championships.
• He has led the Ichabods to 12 NCAA National Tournament appearances.
• In home games, he is 421-77 going 368-66 in Lee Arena.
• He is second in all-time coaching victories in active NCAA Division II coaches.
• His 728 coaching wins is 25th in all-time NCAA coaches at all levels.
• He led the Ichabods to the 1987 NAIA National Championship and a 2001 NCAA National game, which was later vacated by Kentucky Wesleyan.

Newman head coach Mark Potter . . .
• is in his 15th year as Newman University's Head Men's Basketball Coach where he has compiled an overall record of 268-155.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 2-ranked Washburn Ichabods opened MIAA play with a 91-70 win over Southwest Baptist improving to 7-0 on the season. The Ichabods will step out of conference play to take on Newman on Dec. 15 in Wichita.
The Ichabods never trailed against the Bearcats (2-6, 0-1 MIAA) as Washburn took a 40-34 lead into the break despite being outshot by Southwest Baptist 48 percent to 41 percent. Southwest Baptist was 14 of 29 from the field including 6 of 14 from 3-point range but they had 10 first half turnovers leading to 15 Ichabod points. SBU also did not attempt a free throw in the frame and the Ichabods were 7 of 10 from the charity stripe.
In the second half, the Bearcats cut the Ichabod lead to 40-38 out of the break and Washburn built the lead back to eight and again SBU trimmed the Washburn lead back to four with 15:04 to play on a 3-pointer. The Ichabods stretched the lead back to nine at 52-43 with 14:02 left to play on a pair of Bobby Chipman free throws but once again the Bearcats fought back getting within five at 54-49 with 11:32 to play.
Then a Chipman tip would start off a 20-4 run by the Ichabods over the next 4:01 in the game turning a five-point margin into a 74-53 lead with 7:31 to go in the game and SBU did not get closer than 17 the rest of the game as Washburn led by as many as 25 at 88-63 with 2:13 to play before taking the 91-70 win.
Will McNeill led the Ichabods with 29 points adding a career-high 14 rebounds with seven of them coming on the offensive end. He also added four steals and two assists going 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the win. McNeill also went over the 1,300-point mark in his career at Washburn. Chipman scored 16 adding six rebounds and Martin Mitchell had 14 points tying his career-high with seven assists. Jared Henry scored 10 off the bench.
SBU was led by Preson Guiot who scored 13 with eight assists and one turnover.
Washburn held a 44 to 27 advantage on the glass with 20 offensive rebounds leading to 24 second chance points. Washburn also forced 18 SBU turnovers giving the Ichabods 27 points of Bearcat miscues. 
   
Series history with Newman
• Saturday's meeting with the Jets is the 24th all-time. 
• The Ichabods lead the all-time series 18-5. 
• The Ichabods have won the last 15 meetings not falling to the Jets since Feb. 18, 1981 when the Jets won 48-47 in Wichita.

About Newman
• The Jets are 8-0 this season after topping William Jewell last time out 86-84 on Dec. 8.
• The Jets have defeated the three other Kansas MIAA schools winning at Pittsburg State 89-79.
• Newman defeated Fort Hays State 80-78 on Nov. 24 and Emporia State 69-62 in overtime on Nov. 27 with both victories coming in Wichita.
• Shamar Acuay leads the team in scoring at 15.3 ppg while starting only one game this season.
• Marquis Cuyler and Darrell Traylor are also averaging double figures at 11.7 ppg and 10.8 ppg respectively.
Last Time out for Newman
Dec. 8 -- Liberty, Mo. - Newman held a one-point lead at halftime at 39-38 and outscored William Jewell by one in the second half for the 86-84 win.
Marquis Cuyler led the Jets with 20 points and seven rebounds. Trae Beck had 15 points hitting 5 of 9 3-pointers and Shamar Acuay scored 10 off the bench in the win.
Overall the Jets were 12 of 32 from 3-point range going 28 of 67 from the field overall. The Jets were outrebounded by William Jewell 43 to 38. The Jets were also 18 of 21 from the free throw line.
Last meeting with Newman
(Nov. 25, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods led from start to finish as head coach Bob Chipman got his 700th career victory, all at Washburn, in an 88-63 win over Newman Saturday afternoon at Lee Arena.
Alex North shot a perfect 7 for 7 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. He hit three 3-pointers and ended with 21 points. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Will McNeill went 10 for 15 from the field for 22 points and he added five assists.
Martin Mitchell also had five assists and he reached double figures with 10 points. North and Bobby Chipman each had four assists.
The Ichabods shot 52 percent from the field and 54 percent from 3-point range. The Jets (3-2) were 35 percent from the field and 29 percent from long range. Both teams grabbed an even 38 rebounds and WU committed 10 turnovers while Newman had 17.
Kyle Wiggins' free throw at the 9:04 mark of the first half gave Washburn a 10-point lead for the first time. The Ichabods later closed the half on a 14-2 run to take a 26-point lead, 44-18, in to the locker room. McNeill started that stretch with five straight points and Christian Ulsaker scored four of his five points during that stretch.
McNeill's jumper in the paint at 17:46 of the second half pushed Washburn's lead to a game-high 30 points at 50-20.
A 7-0 run later pulled the Jets within 22 but Washburn answered with seven straight to put the Bods back up buy 29, 59-30 with 10:49 to play. The Jets were able to cut it to 20 in the final 1:25 but Ichabods Jared Henry and Dejaun Lofton hit 3s near the end and the Ichabods went on to match the 25-point win they had Tuesday against Peru State to tie the season high.
Eric Saunders led Newman with 13 points and Darrell Traylor and Chuck Colley each had 11. Coley led the Jets with seven rebounds.

Will McNeill was named a preseason All-American by the Basketball Times. He is the first Ichabod to receive preseason All-American honors since Travis Robbins prior to the 2004-05 season.
Will McNeill has been named the MIAA Player of the Week twice on Nov. 26 and on Dec. 3. 
• The Ichabods are +25.5 in scoring margin this season.

• Washburn is 1,438-969-2 all-time in 2,409 games played
