LAS VEGAS -- The Lady Blues were held scoreless for nearly the final seven minutes in a 47-50 loss Wednesday morning to Wisconsin-Parkside in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. The second straight one-possession loss dropped the sixth-ranked Lady Blues to 6-2 after going 0-2 in the Las Vegas games.
The Lady Blues will take 13 days off for the holiday break before returning to Lee Arena to host Emporia State at 5:30 p.m. on January 2 in a non-conference game. That game moved from a 7 p.m. start and will now be part of a doubleheader with the Washburn and ESU men playing at 7:30 p.m.
Washburn led for all of the first half and then the Rangers tied the game for the first time, 32-32 at the 17:33 mark of the second half. They took their first lead, 38-36 at the 11:39 mark. They pushed it as high as six with a 3-pointer at 9:19 but a 3-pointer from Kinderknecht at 6:57 gave the Lady Blues a 47-46 lead.
That would be Washburn's final points. The Rangers added four more points after that off free throws and a jumper. A contested 3-pointer in the final seconds from Kinderknecht was blocked.
Kinderknecht and McCall each scored nine points and
Brittney Lynch led with eight rebounds. Washburn shot 39 percent in the game after just a 30 percent effort (8 of 27) in the second half. They were 1 of 6 from 3-point range in the second half. The Rangers shot 36 percent in the half but made seven 3-pointers to Washburn's three and were 9 of 10 from the free throw line while Washburn was just 2 of 5.
The Lady Blues shot 48 percent in the first half and led by as much as 12 at the 2:32 mark when
Lavonda McCall hit a 3-pointer that made the score 29-17. Washburn went up 5-0 quick and the Rangers didn't score until the 16:35 mark. Washburn then score nine straight to make it 14-3 with George and
Dana Elliott each scoring four during the streak. The Rangers cut the Washburn lead to three with 7:42 to go before an 8-0 run gave Washburn a 26-15 lead. The Rangers later ended the period on a 7-0 run to get back within five points, 29-26 at the half.
