KIRKSVILLE, Mo. --
Cassie Lombardino had her first double-double of the year as the 11th-ranked Lady Blues held on at Truman, 67-59 Wednesday night at Pershing Arena.
Washburn has now won 10 straight and is 19-3 overall and 12-1 in the MIAA. The Lady Blues will look for their 18th 20-win season when they host Fort Hays State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Lee Arena.
Lombardino had 11 points off 4 of 7 shooting and she pulled in a career-high 12 rebounds while blocking four shots. She helped lead a Washburn offense that held a 28-18 advantage on points in the paint.
Ebonie Williams went 6 of 11 from the field for 16 points and
Stevi Schultz went 4 of 9 for 14 points.
The Lady Blues led by as much as 18 in the first half and held a double-digit lead for most of the second half. The Bulldogs were down 57-42 at the 7:19 mark before they went on an 8-0 run to cut Washburn's lead to seven with 4:07 remaining.
Williams hit a jumper with 3:58 remaining to break the streak but it ended up being Washburn's last field goal of the game.
Brittney Lynch and Schultz each made a free throw down the stretch and
Laura Kinderknecht's pair from the stripe with 17 seconds remaining gave Washburn a 10-point lead and Washburn held on.
Washburn shot 59 percent in the first half but just 33 percent in the second half to end the game shooting 48 percent. The Lady Blues, who lead the nation in 3-point shooting, shot 4 of 13 (.308) from long range.
Truman shot in the low 30s from the field both halfs and ended up shooting 33 percent. The Bulldogs were 6 of 14 (.429) from 3-point range.
Washburn committed 15 turnovers and gave up 14 points off those miscues. The Bulldogs gave the ball away just seven times and Washburn capitalized on those with just two points.
Washburn countered its poor performance handling the ball by winning the rebound battle 43-31 and blocking eight shots. Lombardino slapped away four TSU shots and Lynch getting a hand on two.
The Bulldogs led briefly in the opening minutes but after a 7-7 tie, Washburn used an 11-0 run to take an 18-7 lead at the 12:24 mark.
Tiara George and Lynch each had four points off the bench during the run.
The Lady Blues maintained the lead the entire half and were up by 15, 43-27 at halftime. Williams went 4 of 5 for 11 points and Schultz hit a pair of 3-pointers and had nine points.
After getting just six points from the Washburn bench Saturday at Missouri Western, the Lady Blues reserves scored 18 with Lynch leading with nine after a 4 of 6 performance from the field.
Breanna Daniels led the Bulldogs with 18 points off a 7 of 12 performance. She hit four 3-pointers.
Notes: Washburn leads the all-time series against Truman 41-9...the Lady Blues haven't lost in Kirksville since February 1, 2003...they've won nine straight there...Lombardino had her second career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds...her last double-double was February 17 against Missouri Southern with 16 points and 11 rebounds...the 11 rebounds was her previous career high...Lombardino now has 97 career blocks and she's three away from becoming the fifth Lady Blue to reach 100 blocks.
