PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Washburn led early in each game Saturday but ended up getting swept, 4-3 and 11-8 at Pittsburg State. The teams will postpone their Sunday doubleheader due to expected rain and they'll play Monday at 2 p.m.
Washburn fell to 3-5 overall and opened its MIAA schedule with an 0-2 record. Pittsburg State improved to 7-4 and 5-1 in the league.
Blaine Matthews scored on an RBI grounder from
Richard Swan in the first and then
Marcus Peavler drove in a run with a single to give Washburn a 2-0 lead in the opener.
John Calhoun hit a home run in the fourth and then the Gorillas got one back in the bottom half of the fourth.
The Gorillas scored three more in the bottom of the sixth off a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer. Swan and Peavler singled in the top of the seventh to give them a chance but the next two batters were retired to end the game.
Brett Ash (0-2) went the distance for Washburn. He gave up 10 hits and all four of the runs were earned. He walked two and struck out two. Peavler ended with three hits.
Both teams had big innings early in the second game.
Josh Wilder doubled in a run and Blaine had a two-run single as Washburn built a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Gorillas scored six in the third inning off five hits.
Washburn retook the lead in the fifth with three runs off three hits but PSU scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to comeback again.
Trent Speaker (1-1) took the loss for Washburn. He gave up one run in the sixth and then failed to retire a runner in the seventh as he allowed two more runs.
