PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Washburn erupted for a 17-1 win in the opener at Pittsburg State Monday afternoon and then fell in 12 innings, 7-6 in the closing game. The Gorillas took three of four games in the Ichabods' MIAA-opening series.
Washburn (4-6, 1-3 MIAA) hit six home runs in the opener, a school record since 1999, the first year of single-game statistics in the record book.
John Calhoun hit two in that game and one more in the closing game. He ended the doubleheader with seven RBI.
Richard Swan also had two homers in the opening game.
Washburn had a 12-0 lead by the third inning of game one. The Gorilas got their run in the fourth and then Washburn added five more in the final three innings.
Tyler Bean went the distance on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the year.. He allowed five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in three off a shot to left center in the third.
Washburn took another early lead in the second game, 3-0 in the third inning, but PSU got it all back and led 6-3 after five innings.
Josh Wilder doubled and then scored in the seventh and then
Boone Plager hit a two-run homer in the eight to give Washburn a 6-5 lead. The Gorillas tied it in the bottom of the ninth and then won it in the 12th off an RBI double from Ryan Reddick.
Mark Biesma started for Washburn and allowed the first five runs off eight hits.
AJ Green took the loss as he allowed one run in 3 and 2/3 innings of relief.
Swan ended up going 5 of 7 during the two games. Washburn ended with 32 hits while PSU had 20.
