Lady Blues work extra innings to gain sweep over SBU

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues evened their MIAA record at 2-2 after picking up a sweep over Southwest Baptist winning the opener 6-5 in 12 innings while taking a 6-0 shutout win in the nightcap. Washburn will play host to Central Missouri on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the first game which lasted nearly three hours, Washburn's Katie Schoroeder singled scoring Kristen Bell for the winning run in the 6-5 victory. Schroeder finished the game 2 for 6 with the game-winning RBI while scoring a run and walking once in six at bats. Lindsey Moore picked up the win for the Lady Blues pitching all 12 innings recording two strikeouts allowing two earned runs. Washburn took the early lead on an RBI single by Bell in the second inning scoring Britny Cushing who scored twice for Washburn. The Bearcats tied the score in the third on a home run by Autumn Lamle. SBU took the lead scoring two in the fourth, but Washburn came back to tie the score with two runs in the fourth inning when Alex Zordel singled and then Shelby Erickson drew a bases-loaded walk. Neither team would score until SBU picked up two runs in the top of the 12th, but Washburn responded with three in the bottom of the inning to take the win. Erin Macaronas grounded out to pick up an RBI when Erickson scored after being placed on second with the international tie breaker. Kristen Bell singled scoring Cushing setting up Schroeder's game-winning hit.  Cushing had three hits as did Bell and Kacy Covert.

In the second game, Washburn scored solo runs in the first, second and sixth innings while adding three in the third while Kayla Oldham held the Bearcats to two hits while striking out five for the 6-0 win. Schroeder was hit leading off the game and scored on an RBI single by Erickson. In the second, Bell scored on a wild pitch to put Washburn up 2-0. In the third inning, Washburn scored three times. Cushing tripled to left scoring Erickson who led off the inning with a walk. Covert then drove in two with a single to the right side sending Bell and Oldham home with Washburn runs. Washburn added one more in the sixth inning when Cushing drove in Erickson with a single up the middle. Cushing finished with three hits and 2 RBI while Covert also drove in two.
