John Calhoun had his second mult-homer game this year as Washburn beat Truman 5-2 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday. The Bulldogs took the second game 3-0 to give the Ichabods a 7-7 record (3-4 MIAA) going into their series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
Calhoun hit a solo shot in the first inning of game one and then hit a three-run shot in the second inning. Washburn had finished its scoring by the time the second inning was over.
Tyler Bean followed Calhoun's first inning blast with a double and then he scored after
Brad Alberts doubled him in. Washburn produced all of its second inning runs with two outs.
Ben Reynoldson walked and then Matthews was hit by a pitch to set up Calhoun's three-run blast. He's now batting .463 with an .852 slugging percentage.
Kerry Schachenmeyer pitched the first six innings and allowed two runs on five hits with two walks. He improved to 2-0 on the year while
AJ Green pitched the final inning to earn his first save.
The Bulldogs scored once in the first and once in the fourth and ended up with five hits. Washburn had 11 hits with Calhoun going 2 for 4 and Alberts going 4 for 4 at the plate.
The Ichabods were shut out in the second game for the first time this year and held to just two hits.Truman had RBI singles in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Eric Graff led off the third for Washburn with a hit and
Richard Swan had a hit in the fifth. The Ichabods also got runners on in the sixth and seventh off walks but failed to produce a run.
Mark Biesma fell to 0-2 on the mound for Washburn. He went five innings and gave up all three runs off six hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Bret Gerstner earned the win for TSU as the Bulldogs moved to 2-13 and 1-10 in the MIAA while snapping an 11-game losing streak.
