ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Griffons won a pair of 3-2 games Saturday afternoon to sweep the Ichabods as the two began a four-game MIAA series. The two will complete the series with a doubleheader Sunday at noon.
Washburn fell to 13-10 and 9-7 in the MIAA while MWSU moved to 17-9 and 10-6 in the league.
The Ichabods scored two early in the second game and starter
Kerry Schachenmeyer kept the Griffons to just two hits through the first eight innings. Missouri Western got two on in the bottom of the ninth with a walk and a single and then Nate Ramler doubled them both in to tie it.
Seth Huninghake took the mound in relief of Schachenmeyer but gave up a hit to drive in Ramler. Schachenmeyer earned the loss, his first of the year (3-1) as he was responsible for all three runs.
Tyler Bean went 3 for 5 but he failed to cross the plate each time. Overall, Washburn had 11 hits but left 16 on base, a school record since single-game records were first archived in 1999.
John Calhoun and Blain Matthews each had two hits.
The Ichabods got their two runs in the third inning when Calhoun and
Boone Plager started the inning with singles. Bean and
Brad Alberts then each drove them in with singles.
In the first game the Ichabods were kept to just six hits.
Connor Crimmins gave Washburn a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run in the third, his first long ball of the year and Washburn's 25th of the season.
The Griffons tied it in the bottom of the third with a run and got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth off a triple and an RBI grounder.
Brett Ash (2-3) pitched the entire game for Washburn and gave up two earned runs off six hits. He struck out five and walked none.
