Leading Off
The Ichabods will start MIAA play with a four-game series this weekend at Pittsburg State. Washburn and the Gorillas will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. and another doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
Washburn evened its record at 3-3 with a 10-4 win over Newman Tuesday after scoring 10 unanswered runs.
John Calhoun had a five-hit performance for the Ichabods.
Pittsburg State is 5-4 after falling 8-7 to Northeastern State Wednesday. The Gorillas opened their MIAA schedule by taking three of four games against Lincoln last weekend.
The Ichabods are the last team to open MIAA play as the other 10 teams got four games in last weekend.
The Series
Washburn leads the all-time series 47-42 against the Gorillas. PSU took three of four last year in Topeka. The two teams have not played a series in Pittsburg since 2009 when they each won twice.
Last Time Out For Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan. --
John Calhoun went 5 for 5 from the plate and scored three runs as Washburn scored 10 unanswered runs in a 10-4 win against Newman Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field.
The Ichabods improved to 3-3 while the Jets fell to 11-6. Washburn will begin MIAA play with a four-game series at Pittsburg State starting Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
The Ichabods were down 4-0 before they scored a run in the fifth and five runs in the sixth off six hits. Calhoun singled and then stole second and third base before
Tyler Bean drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
Richard Swan and
Marcus Peavler opened the sixth inning with doubles. Swan scored and then, with two outs, Washburn scored four more times.
Brad Alberts ended the scoring with a two-run single.
The Ichabods scored four more runs in the eighth when Bean and
Eric Graff each had two-run doubles.
Trent Speaker entered the game in the sixth inning and earned the win as Washburn came back. He kept Newman hitless and scoreless and struck out two as he earned his first decision.
Seth Huninghake and
AJ Green finished the game, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
The Jets sent eight pitchers to the mound. Gage Daniels took the loss as he allowed two runs on three hits in the sixth inning.
Blaine Matthews went 2 for 4 for Washburn with a pair of runs. Alberts, Peavler and
Tyler Bailey each had two-hit games. The Ichabods ended up with 17 hits while Newman had six.
Calhoun's five-hit game is the third highest since single-game records were kept in 1999. Two players have hit six or more since then and Calhoun is the third to get five. The last Ichabod to get at least five hits in a game was Jeff Maxon, who had six against Minnesota Crookston in 2007.
Head Coach Steve Anson
Washburn head coach Steve Anson coached his 1500th game at Washburn in the season finale last year and now in 2012, his 33rd season at Washburn, he's 17 wins shy of 800 wins. Anson, the winningest coach in the MIAA, is 783-720-3 (.521) in 33 seasons at Washburn and 806-742-3 (.521) in 34 seasons overall as a head coach.
Anson entered 2012 with the 10th highest win total among active NCAA Division II coaches with 803. That's the highest among MIAA coaches. Among coaches all-time, he's 27th in career wins.
Ichabods picked sixth in MIAA preseason poll
The Ichabods were picked to finish sixth in the MIAA preseason coaches poll released Thursday by the conference office. Washburn finished sixth in last year's conference standings to earn a trip to the postseason tournament.

Central Missouri and Emporia State shared the MIAA regular season title with 37-7 records and UCM was picked first this year with 99 points and nine first-place votes. ESU got two first-place votes and 92 points. The Ichabods earned 56 points and trailed No. 5 Missouri Southern (63 points), No. 4 Fort Hays State (73 points) and No. 3 Missouri Western (74 points).
