TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods pounded out 18 hits in a doubleheader split Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field with Fort Hays State. Washburn won the opener 9-2 and then fell in the second game 5-2. The Ichabods will wrap up their 10-game home stand with four games this weekend against Lincoln starting with a single game Friday at 4 p.m.
Washburn went to 17-14 overall and 13-11 in the MIAA while the Tigers went to 16-16 and 14-13 in the league. The two split a doubleheader in Hays March 27 and they split their four-game season series.
Brett Ash started on the mound for Washburn in game one after he had thrown a three-hit shutout Friday in a 3-0 win against Missouri Southern. He threw 59 pitches in the 57-minute game against the Lions. Against FHSU he gave up seven hits and two runs and he struck out six while walking none. Ash improved to 4-3 overall.
The Tigers got the first run of the game in the top of the second and then the Ichabods answered with four in the bottom of the third. A bunt single by
Blaine Matthews loaded the bases with no outs and then
Brad Alberts drove
Connor Crimmins in with a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Bean then drove in
John Calhoun with a single.
Marcus Peavler drove in Matthews with a sacrifice fly and then Bean later scored on a wild pitch.
Washburn kept the offense going in the fourth with three more runs. Calhoun hit a two-run double and then
Brad Alberts hit a two-run double to left to end scoring in the inning.
The Tigers got one in the top of the fifth on a home run from Nash Smith but Calhoun hit his second double of the day, this time driving in two runs, to give the Ichabods their ninth run.
Calhoun was 2 for 3 with three RBI and Alberts also drove in three. Washburn out-hit the Tigers 9-7 and the Tigers had the only error of the game.
The Ichabods took an early lead in the second game but the Tigers took advantage of 11 Ichabods left on base to salvage the split.
After Matthews doubled with one out in the first, Alberts drove him in with a single for his fourth RBI of the day. Washburn made it 2-0 with Calhoun's seventh home run of the year, a solo shot in the fourth.
The Tigers got them all back in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer from Smith, his second of the day and they kept Washburn scoreless their five remaining at-bats after that. FHSU added one in the sixth and then two in the ninth. Calhoun was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth and he stole second and third but no other Ichabod batter was able to do anyhting.
Washburn stole eight bases in the two games including five in the second game. The Tigers were thrown out in their two steal attempts.
