TOPEKA, Kan. -- Connor Crimmins went 5 for 7 from the plate and drove in four runs as Washburn swept a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn took the opener 18-6 and won the finale 9-0.

The same two teams will play another twin bill Saturday at 11 a.m. to complete the four-game series. The Ichabods improved to 19-14 and 15-11 in the MIAA while the Blue Tigers dropped to 3-30 and 3-22 in the league. Washburn coach Steve Anson will go for his 800th win in the Ichabods dugout as he enters Saturday with 799 wins in 33 years.

Washburn's 18 runs scored in game one was the most in a game for the Ichabods since scoring 18 against Northwest Missouri on 2008.

Crimmins, batting in the ninth spot in the lineup in both games, went 3 for 4 in the opener with three RBI and two runs scored. He had one of those RBI and two runs scored in the fifth inning as Washburn scored 14 times. Washburn batted through the order exactly twice in the inning. Richard Swan had a two-run home run and Blaine Matthews had a two-run double. David Lammers, batting as a pinch runner, had a three-run double and John Calhoun had a two-run double.

All of this happened after the Blue Tigers took a 5-1 and then 5-4 lead. Calhoun led off the bottom of the first with a homer for Washburn and then Lincoln later answered with five runs in the fourth to take the lead. Washburn got three more back in the fourth with Crimmins getting a two-run double in the inning.

Kerry Schachenmeyer went the first six innings for Washburn on the mound and got the win. He gave up five runs on nine hits as he improved to 5-1. Along with the 18 runs scored, he got offensive support from 14 Washburn hits.

Washburn built a 4-0 lead through five innings in the second game by scoring its runs one per inning after a scoreless first. Boone Plager had two RBI in the first five innings. Washburn broke through for four runs in the sixth off RBI hits from Blake Hageman and Crimmins and a two-run triple from Calhoun. Brad Alberts hit an RBI triple in the seventh to make the score 9-0.

Trent Speaker went the distance for Washburn. He pitched his first shutout in just his secord start and allowed four hits as he improved to 2-2. He struck out five and walked one.

Washburn catcher Richard Swan threw out three Blue Tiger would-be base stealers in the two games.
