Anson gets 800th win as Washburn coach as Ichabods split doubleheader with Lincoln

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn won the first game Saturday against Lincoln 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th to give head coach Steve Anson his 800th win in the Ichabods dugout. The Blue Tigers took the second game of the doubleheader 6-3 but Washburn took three of four in the series to improve to 20-15 and 16-12 in the MIAA.

Washburn will begin an 11-game road trip next Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Central Missouri. The Ichabods and MIAA-leading Mules will also play a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. to complete a four-game series.

Marcus Peavler singled to right center in the bottom of the 10th in the opener and moved to second after Blake Hageman was intentionally walked. Richard Swan then singled to center field to drive in Peavler and give Anson his 800th win in 33 years at Washburn.

Tyler Bean pitched the first seven innings for Washburn and gave up an unearned run off six hits. He struck out eight and walked none. Richard Mais earned the win after he pitched the final three innings and gave up two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. He improved to 2-0 on the year.

Washburn scored in the sixth on an RBI double from Hageman and then Lincoln tied it in the seventh with an unearned run.

John Calhoun went 3 for 5 but was left on base three times. Six other Ichabods got hits to give Washburn nine but they left 13 total runners on base.

Washburn took a 1-0 lead in the second game when Calhoun doubled, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Blaine Matthews. Lincoln tied it in the second and then each team scored twice in the third to make it 3-3. The Ichabods got their runs on RBI hits from Boone Plager and Matthews, both with two outs.

The Blue Tigers kept their offense going with three in the fourth and then shut Washburn out for four straight innings to earn just their fourth win of the year (4-31, 4-23 MIAA).

Mark Biesma started for Washburn and left with the score tied at 3-3 after three innings. Seth Huninghake gave up the three runs in the fourth to fall to 1-1 on the year. Lincoln starter Chris Pfau earned hits third win of the year as he went the distance and gave up six hits with five strikeouts.

Calhoun was once again Washburn's only player with multiple hits as he went 2 for 3. He went 5 for 8 in the doubleheader and moved his season batting average to .406 to lead the team.
