WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Ichabods scored first in game one but sixth-ranked Central Missouri came back and went on to sweep Washburn in a doubleheader Saturday to open a four-game series. The Mules won the opener 8-2 and took the second game 6-0.
Wahsburn fell to 20-17 and 16-14 in the MIAA while the Mules improved to 33-7 and 26-4 in the league, winning their 14th straight conference game. The two teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with another doubleheader.
John Calhoun reached on an error to lead off the first game and moved to third on a double by
Boone Plager. A groundout from
Brad Alberts drove him in. The Mules answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and Washburn tied it in the second on a double from
Connor Crimmins that scored
Tyler Bean.
Washburn got just one more hit after that, a single by
Marcus Peavler in the fourth, but the Mules scored four in the second inning to jump ahead and added one more in the third and one in the sixth.
Ichabods starter
Brett Ash pitched all seven innings for Washburn and fell to 4-4. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, off seven hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
Washburn starter
Kerry Schachenmeyer kept the Mules hitless and off the scoreboard until they scored two in the fourth off four hits. They scored again in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to make it 6-0. Schachenmeyer gave up all six runs in the first 6 1/3 innings and fell to 5-2. He gave up six hits and walked six.
Peavler went 2 for 3 at the plate and Washburn ended up with six hits. The Mules had seven and both teams left seven runners on base.
